Tire pressure/temp monitor install

Here's my latest bell/whistle. FYI the feds have mandated that starting late '06 ALL vehicles have to be equipped with TPMs (tire pressure monitors). So I researched the various products available. I choose the Smartire because it's the only one that has a remote display you can integrate into the dash or console. The inside install is easy, about 3 hours taking your time and being careful cutting the hole. For those of you that pull trailers, boats, etc. you can add the transmitters there & it reads right on the display in your H2. Very nice & all wireless. Unless you have tire equipment you'll have to take it to a tire shop to install the transmitters/bands in the tires & have them balanced. Just so happens I was due for a rotate & balance so they're doing it all for me tomorrow. Cheapest place to buy is Vulcan Tire in Utah. $199 complete plus $45 if you want the built in remote display. Here's their link Vulcan This only pulls 125 mamp (that's milliamps) so you can connect to any existing switched circuit. I just used the sunroof power but you could use the garage door transmitter or any other convenient power source.

I do wonder if it will sound an alert if the tires are aired down for wheeling, and if so, is there a defeat button?

Vulcan Tire in Utah? Just so happens that we'll be driving right by there on the way to MOAB!!!!

Touch any button & it stops the sound. Better yet it's totally programmable so you can set all the alerts, differentials, temps to your liking. Really pretty cool & would be a real nice safety feature for those that tow. My avatar AGAIN

Back when I had my 96 Vette, I researched these. Depending on the wheel/tire combination, it was reported that it is possible to destroy the wheel sensor during an extremely low tire pressure condition. I would think you would need to be careful when airing down during an off-road run. If you run over the right sized rock while aired down, you might crush the sensor. This may not be a problem on the H2, but it is something to think about.

Fix-a-flat is a definite no-no!

Also, tire stores have a nasty habbit of destroying the sensors when removing the tires from the rim. Make sure they know the sensors are there BEFORE they start working on your wheels!

Discount tire is putting the sensors in and I was surprised how familiar they were with these. And yes, always tell your tire company they're there.

Any idea on when it is supposed to arrive? Also, make sure it is an '03, since that's what I have. Who knows what changes have been made.

Got the sensors installed in the wheels today. Works great!

TAZ...You have to have both. The $199 complete kit comes with the basic "receiver". It has 4 colored lights corresponding to each tire. If there's a tire problem the light flashes and sound alerts you. For $45 you can get the full display like I have. It plugs into the basic "receiver" above. Of course all is hidden except the display as you see it in my install. With the remote display it's totally programmable to your liking, shows each tires pressure, temperature, differential, etc. Well worth the $45 bucks.

</div></BLOCKQUOTE> After seeing the inside of our wheels and the drop center I don't thing this will be a problem. It's very deep and it would take a pretty hard "hit" to get to the sensor. Of course anything can happen but if it does it just means replacing the one sensor. No big deal.
