Default Question for Hummer Pro's

so, I had a little lift done on my ride a while ago. I had 37.5 toyo open country's put on with 20's. I did not want to spend the extra money to have it regeared, so I tried to just roll with it. Obviously, this created a little problem for highway driving, as my ride usually downshifts to push the speed limit and stays in 3rd when highway driving, ony shifting into 4th when it is straight or downhill. I am trying to get it to drive on freeways better without chnging the gearing, so here is my question for everyone:

I have put a chip in it, and this has helped a little, but it is so close to having enough power to get to 4th and just stay there.

Would it help if I was to add an intake and a performance exhaust in this situation? I just need there to be enough power so that my ride can push 4th gear on the highway, but I don't know enough about intakes or exhausts to say that this could give me the little extra I need without having to regear. Please give me some advice if you know about this....

a good intake and exhaust will run you more than the gears if you can install'em yourself. Gonna be spending even more money if you do the intake and exhaust and it still doesn't get you were you want. You know hands down gears will work... I put an intake on my ride and the engine got louder and it lost some torque.

I'm in the same boat, I have a magnacharger waiting to be installing in my garage and I'm still re-gearing.

When I did my first H2, I did gears at first to make up for the larger tires... It helped but not enough. Later I installed a supercharger.

My present SUT has 37's on it with no gears and no supercharger. It's gutless.

Soooo, this weekend I installed a supercharger. Haven't driven it yet since I don't have the correct fuel block but I'm gonna try this way without gears this time.

I'll let ya know how it works.

what type of chip are you running?
i have the hypertech tunner running the basic tune with 37"s and i have good pep and no problems on the freeway going 65-75.
the tunner asked if i had bigger tires and if i changed gears, it is supposed to adjust your shift points and add pep.
did your chip just adjust your engine power? did/does it adjust for bigger tires?

If you look hard enough, you can find some magnachargers used for $1500-3000. They are good to 100,000 as long as they were taken care of. Even if it has high mileage, sending it back to the manufactuere for a total rebuild would only be around $1200, still cheaper than brand new.

Thanks for the tip Mud- yah, I am running a Superchips Cortex right now. It definetely helps from how it was running before right after adding the bigger tires, but my biggest thing is that most of the highways around here are 75, so I am needing to keep it between 75 or 80. Between 65 and 74ish, it runs great, but anything above that it is downshifting into 3rd. I guess I might as well start the quest for a supercharger, because I am not hearing good stuff from everyone about regearing. Mo $$$, Mo problems!

One more question to add to this: If I do go with the regear, will my chip still help it to perform at least half way decent? I am reading everyone saying their ride is gutless after the regear, I wonder if my chip would help this...

Gears will greatly improve performance with larger tires. Your programmer will still work and allow you to adjust for the tire size/gear ratio change to keep your speedo accurate.

This will not work. I have one of mine that is supercharged and the problem will again appear as your out of the power band of the supercharger with the tire size combination, it will only lead to more issues. REGEARING is your solution.

Don't forget superchargers are known to blow transmissions on h2s all day long...

X2 on what these guys said....

On my first H2, I installed a lift and 38's. The truck was gutless. I installed 4.56's front and rear and it was better but still gutless. You couldn't keep 70 mph on cruise if any hills came at all.

I ended up installing a supercharger. Much better.

I sold that H2 and bought an '06 SUT. Installed lift and 37's (same exact height as 38's)

Installed superchips and CAI, guttttlesssss.

So a few weeks ago, I installed a supercharger, MUCH BETTER!

One of these days, I'm still gonna install gears.

Save your money and go gears and supercharger.

I keep thinking about the Chevy crate motors and what a RamJet 502 would do in an H2. I know you would have to have a custom exhaust and oil pan because of clearance problems, if their dimensions are correct and the front steering would probably have to be modified and custom engine mounts, but OH WHAT TORQUE -565 ft-lbs!
I helped my son shoehorn a 454 Chevy crate motor into a 1965 Chevy Nova - it took a year and half and a lot of cussing and fabricating steering parts, oil pan mods, frame rail modifications and lots of cussing, but the finished product was worth it.

with Crush

If your doing the tires the right and easiest way to go is supercharger and gears!
One added bonus is the external transmission oil cooler which is cheap insurance for the mods ( my tranny temp stays at 160 all day long with the supercharger)
