GPS TRACKER
Anyone installed a GPS Tracker in their rig instead of LoJack? Looking for a low cost alternative. Also do not want to pay monthly fees. I only need it in case of recovery if my rig gets stolen.

Re: GPS TRACKER
They can track it with the Onstar in your Hummer. A friend had his Onstar equipped Corvette stolen and Onstar located it for the police within the hour.

Re: GPS TRACKER
Onstar can not track your rig once the service is turned off.

Re: GPS TRACKER
I think if stolen you can still get onstar to track your rig even if the service isnt turned on. They can simply activate it, im sure they will charge you a fee.

Re: GPS TRACKER
My problem with Onstar is that the Thieves will know about it. What is to stop them busting off the Antenna or cutting the wires? I like the idea of a GPS Tracker so I can call the cops or I can turn up with my good friends Smith & Wesson! LoJack is $1,500.00 and limited to Cops having a Locator. These Teen Trackers seem like a good cost effective option. A lot of companies are doing them. Work on Cell phone and GPS signals. Don't know which one to pick. Some have monthly fees, some don't.

Re: GPS TRACKER
Onstar can turn on and track your car at any time and almost all insurance companies pay part or most of this "one-time fee" if your car is stolen. The problem remains that cracking off the antenna makes it more difficult to track, placing a coffee can over the antenna makes it almost impossible to track, and disconnecting the battery makes it impossible to track. Professional thieves know this and LoJack and other systems have an internal battery. We have LoJack on some of our field equipment and have been very satisfied with recovery resulting from it.

Re: GPS TRACKER
Sorry Gentlemen, but this counter to what I have been told from Onstar.
According to Onstar, they cannot track your vehicle when the service is turned off. They can reactivate Onstar if you are in the vehicle with your key and have your key/car ID number.
Hence if your Rig is stolen, and unless the thief is willing to cooperate with the Onstar Operator (Highly Doubtfull) you will not be able to turn on Onstar and track your vehicle.
Please keep in mind, this is information I received from One Onstar Operator/Customer Service Person.
If you guys happen to talk to another Onstar Operator/Customer Service Person who tells you different, please let me know. I would be curious to hear different.
Thanks

Re: GPS TRACKER
That is probably talking about the direction service, im sure in the case of your car being stolen they can track it.
