38" rear spare tire

im getting all my ducks in a row with this lift. since the rancho kit wont allow me to reuse the stock 17" wheels, i have no more use for the rear spare tire. and being that im going to a 38" tire, i dont think i would want to drive around too much with that much of a difference in size. so my question is, will a 38" tire fit on the factory rear mount? and my next question is should i go with a wheel and tire combo that is the same as what im doing? i have 20" Mazzi Hulk wheels, powdercoated Satin Black with 38" toyo's.... or go with something more for emergency use than appearance? something like a 17 or 18" black steel wheel with the 38" tire? comments, questions, and any input is welcome.

or....should i just remove the spare tire from the back in all? get rid of everything and just not have a spare....... what all would be involved in converting this back to a non 5th wheel spare truck?

If you're going to have the outside mounted spare tire, then I would think appearance would be important and would go with a matching spare. If it's inside, then it doesn't matter what it looks like.

My spare tire was inside so I have never done the outside spare delete, but I can't imagine it's that hard. I don't carry a spare. AAA membership is cheaper than a 5th tire/rim that is that large/nice/expensive. But if you're going to do much off roading you'll want a spare for sure.

well...if i go with a matching spare, then i need to find someone that will sell me 1 wheel. which will be around 200-250 bucks. then get it sand blasted and powdercoated, which will be around 100 bucks. then the tire which will be around 400 bucks. so 700-800 bucks for the 1 spare tire....in a 38" with a 20" wheel.

i dont have room...or really want to take up the space in the truck to put the tire by the 3rd row seat. i have 2 big rottweilers that i take everywhere and need that space. so putting it inside is out ofthe question.

i really dont do any offroading with my truck. i live 5 minutes from where i work. dont really take it on long trips. so maybe not having a spare at all will be the better, cheaper , route to go......

i know my license plate frame on the truck doesnt have lights or holes in it to mount to...its on the cover of my spare tire. so that needs changed out. and ill need the new tow hook for the spot where the swing arm is. other than that.....i dont think theres much else to change.

I agree... I have 5 matching wheels and tires. Thats a big nut to swallow for a spare tire. Those 38" toyos in 24" are $700/each.

I really wish I would of stayed in the 20-22" wheel size. So many more options alot cheaper.

im in the same boat, but im running 40's. I still say the best option is to go with a full size spare and rim to match. Im in the exact same situation too, dont drive the truck too far from home most of the time. I would still like to have the full size spare for summer trips to our lake house in North carolina (4 hr drive). Ive been looking for 1 used Toyo 40x15.5, it aint going too good so far. I would hate to drop $900 on a spare rime/ tire combo.

after research, ive decided to go with the spare and not do a spare delete....way too much stuff id have to buy and change. and id rather have a spare and not need it , than not have the spare and need it. so my options are go witha 18" spare and a 38" toyo or 20" with the 38" toyo? either size will get powdercoated to match. only difference is the size and price. the 18" wheel is like 140 and probably 50-60 for powdercoating and then 400 for the tire. OR 210 for the 20" wheel and 60+ for powdercoating and around 450 for the tire?

so around 600 for the 18 or 700 or so for the matching 20" spare.....

do you have your wheel on the back? im concerned that the larger tire wont fit on the mount. i thought i saw on here somewhere that someone had to make their own mounting plate to fit a larger tire.

Any tire should fit fine height wise (35, 37, 38, etc).

The backspacing is what's going to be a minor issue. The OEM arm is designed to mount a wheel with 5.5" BS. If your BS is less than that you may find that the rubber of your sidewall doesn't actually touch the metal of the carrier when the tire is mounted...basically the tire will sit out a little further.

so as long as its not a bigger back space(5.5+, which mine isnt) it should fit fine, it will juse stick out and not be supported by the frame of the swing. so being that mine is a 4.5" BS, mine will stick out 1" more than it does now? not to mention the tire is a bit wider that the stock tire size anyways...right? so maybe 2" or so further than it does now. which isnt a big deal.

Getting it down is the easy part...I'll just roll that ****er off the rack and hopefully it dosn't bounce back and hit the truck.

I pay the extra $4/month road side assistance just because of that. Yea- I got a flat...make sure to bring something w/ a boom on it to put my spair back on the roof.

im working on getting a visually blemished wheel form Mazzi. hopefully they have something and i can get a deal on it, and then take it in to get powdercoated. im really not wanting to pay 200+ for a perfectly good wheel to just powdercoat, just to be on the back.

well, i just ordered 5 toyo open country MT 38" tires.....should be here in a few weeks. next on the list.....the lift!

I though mazzi went under last year?? See alot of sites listing limited remaning quantity only.

I'm not sure. But they couldn't get me a blemished One. They scrapped them already. So I gotta buy new. 200 bucks ......
