My rear tire carrier has become really hard to open and close recently. I tried to spray some lubricant but no help. I remember this issue coming up once on this board but I couldn't find the thread. Anyone have any solutions or will I have to make a trip to the dealership? Appreciate any info.

You've got to pump some grease in there from time to time. I've had mine for about a year and a half and the problems I had were more with a rattle (they have fixed this issue) and getting it lined up just right so that it opened and closed smoothly with no dragging on the little bushing.
If you're talking about the pin, it can be an alignment issue as well.

They do have a grease fitting and will sieze up if not regularly lubricated. If you have the rattle then they have a TSB as Klaus said with a new bushing in the receiver side of the carrier that removes the extra play and thus the rattle.
Your dealer can fix all of this for you.
Thanks,
David

I've had mine for a year and a half. There is a grease fitting that I've greased twice and have had no problem. I installed the carrier myself and lined it all up and again have had no problems. Just be sure to toque it down to specs, I believe it is 67 lbs.

Took it in today and they replaced it with a new one. Apparantly, this one is an updated version. Pretty cool...and glides like a hocky puck on ice.

The early SMA tire carriers had a significant design flaw in the hinge. While there is a grease fitting on the side of the hinge, there is no where for the grease to go. They neglected to put in any kind of channel for the grease to go into. The new ones have a spiral design channel.
I'm getting a new one on Monday(along with a new front diff seal )

Is anyone using the Predator drop down tire carrier with the bearings, and if so how has it functioned? Do you have to drill to install the SMA carrier? Thanks for the advice.

I recently started experiencing this problem as well(at ~31k miles). I have tried hitting the zerk several times , and with the carrier at several positions, but the problem persists. Looks like I'll be making a trip to the dealer as well.
