Default Please Help - H2 Alternator Questions

I have a 2003 H2 and I will be adding a audio system to my h2.
I want to add a DC Power 300 amp alternator.

Is the h2 stock alternator internally regulated or is it regulated by the cpu?

If it's regulated by CPU, will I start blowing out fuses?

Or will I be fine with an external regulator to bypass the cpu if so?

This is the alternator I want to get:
http://www.nationsstarteralternator....237-300spx.htm

I already added a yellow top battery to the front & will have a kinetik hc2400 battery connected to the music.

(any help/comment/advise is very much greatly appreciated)

Sorry, misunderstood until I read it again. The only thing I could find in the service manual was what the picture shows, nothing about the regulator and what controls it. If it don't answer your question you might try PM'ing HUMTECH and see if he can help.

Ed

I'm almost positive it is internal. I have a 280 or 300 amp alternator, big stereo and all on my truck and I have not had any electrical issues at all. Be sure to run a separate battery and a battery relay and everything will be fine. I've had the same alternator since 2008.

AD-244 generators are non-repairable. They are electrically similar to earlier models. Generator features the following major components:

? A delta stator.
? Rectifier bridge.
? Rotor with slip rings and brushes.
? Conventional pulley.
? Dual internal fans.
? Voltage regulator.
? Pulley and fan cool slip ring and frame.

AD stands for air-cooled dual internal fan, 2 is an electrical design designator, 30/44 denotes outside diameter of stator laminations in millimeters, over 100 millimeters. Generator is rated at 145 amperes. Generator features permanently lubricated bearings. Service should only include tightening of mounting components. Generator is replaced as a complete unit. Voltage regulator controls field current of rotor in order to limit system voltage. Regulator switches current on and off at a rate of 400 cycles per second in order to perform these following functions:

? Radio noise control.
? Obtain correct average current needed for proper system voltage control.

At high speeds, on-time may be 10 percent with off-time at 90 percent. At low speeds, on-time may be 90 percent and off-time 10 percent. Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) illuminates charge indicator on Driver's Information Center (DIC) message center when this occurs:

? Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects that generator output is 11 volts or less or greater than 16 volts. IPC receives a class 2 message from PCM requesting illumination.
? IPC determines that system voltage is 11 volts or less or greater than 16 volts. IPC receives a class 2 message from Body Control Module (BCM) indicating system voltage.
? IPC performs displays test at start of each ignition cycle. Indicator illuminates for approximately 5 seconds.

^good info.

Pretty sure almost all modern alternators are internally regulated. Back in the day there were external regulators but as with carbs those have gone away with increases in technology.
