Back up warning device...

I don't want to add a hitch cam but I am interested in placing a back up warning device to let me know how far I am from something behind me...i backed up on to a honda prelude at night and scratched my bumper but ruined his rear light housing...sorry...
I would really appreciate any input...
Does anyone know of where I can get a good reasonably priced one???

I have these installed and looks OEM. I got the VDI one (Micro 3).

Once you have them installed, You wondered how you got by w/o them.

I'll post pics of installation when I get a chance. You gotta see where I mounted the module.

David, thanks for the input on the reversing unit you installed. I would like to see photos of where you had it mounted inside and at the rear. I have been looking for such a unit but wanted to see one installed in an H2. I already have a back up camera but this will assist too. Post those photos, dude.

rpv, This was purchased through the dealer but installed by the vendor for the product. It is called Elegant Wood Design at 960 E. Orangethorpe, Sutie E, Anaheim, Ca 92801 with phone 714-680-0505. I forgot the price of the kit and install but it was a "pretty penny'. I think I got the 32 piece set. Call the vendor and he will give you the skinny on what they have to offer. I don't know if he will sell direct of if he deals only dealers. I suspect you can buy direct. Call the number above. I think they have a web site too. Good luck. I like the look as it adds a little warmth to the interior and is no so grey and bleak looking.

Poron comes in two models. I got the Micro 3 with Voice Distance Indicator (VDI). More info on the Micro 3 here

There's also the Mini 3 with LED display. More info on the Mini 3 here

Here's where I mounted the speaker, sensor and module respectively.

There's a predrilled hole in the rear right light housing. If you look underneath the right rear bumper under the right lights, you'll see a 1/2" hole which leads up to the inside of the rear right cavity. Inside the cavity is covered by insulation. Just run the wires under the rear bumper and up through the right housing.
I used wire looms to protect the wires underneath the bumper and also give it that OEM look as there are a couple of other wire looms under there already.

The speaker was just as easy. You'll see how to run the speaker wire when you look inside the cavity.

The tricky part was knowing how to remove the rear light housing. First remove the two star bolts. There are two clips on the outer side of the light housing and the only way to complete remove the housing is to slide the housing towards the center.

Here's the location of the sensors circled in yellow. The center sensor was mounted underneath the rear hitch. The kit comes with brackets, 3M double-sided tape and shims. The sensors on the sides have to be shimed to angle slightly downwards. The H2 is so high that it may not catch the bumpers of other cars unless it's angled downwards a bit. The hitch was low enough that I can just angle the center sensor perpendicular to the hitch.

Like I said, once you have this device, I don't know how I did w/o it. Actually, I didn't. Before the sensor, when I thought I was REALLY close to the car behind me, I had like 4' to spare. With the sensor, I can get as close as 2' w/o any worries.

With the tire carrier, don't forget to subtract 1 foot from what the computer tells you. (i.e., 3 feet actually means 2 feet since the tire sticks out about a foot. For those w/o carrier, the distance should be true.

NSTXC, Very cool install. Tell me more about the sensor on the hitch. Did you just stick the sensor on the face of the receiver or did you use some kind of bracket? Can you still use the hitch? Did you consider installing the side sensors on the plastic bumper to get them down lower? Sounds like you're happy with its performance. Any other comments?

The kit comes with 3 brackets which can be adjusted to any angle. You can still use the hitch. However, since the H2 is so high, most of you will probably use a lowering tongue. In which case, the center sensor will immediate go off as soon as you put it in reverse. I asked Poron if you can just use two sensors and as long as you make it equal distance from the center and at most 12" from the sides, you're OK.

If you use two, then I don't know where you would mount the sensor. Especially if you have a tire carrier.

I originally thought of mounting the side sensors in the square groove, but that means you would need to drill the bumper.

Believe me, I spent hours trying to find the best location and this is what I came up with.

BTW, the wire for the side sensors simply were tucked behind the bottom of the light housing. No drilling. Just be careful and don't pinch the wires where it would get cut. To be sure, I wraped the wires where it got tucked with electrical tape thereby giving it a thicker insulation.
