Default 1996 for sale - a good deal

http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/car/729751917.html

Am thinking of upgrading to an H1, but don't have much to spend on it. Would this be a decent deal? What are common problems w/1996 models? TIA

It looks okay, but the wheels are crap aftermarket. I would take the time to inspect for coolant leaks, oil leaks, and of course corrosion. Most expensive chronic issue with 1996 is the HVAC system, if it is the older system and the heater core goes bad, that will be a huge expense to repair as it is a complete HVAC replacement to the 1997.5 and newer design.

I was on ebay yesterday and saw some killer deals. There is a black wagon with sat tv , killer stereo, and its in good condition. I parked next to it at a Hummer Happening in Charlotte , N.C. last fall. THe guy was real nice and gave me some maintenence advise. It looked like a clean truck. There was other deals also.
When looking at an older H1, if the AC controls are digital, up and down with 2 buttons, try and pass, if it has knobs for fan speed and temp it has been updated.

Older hummers you have 2 issues. HVAC upgrades and engine upgrades on 96-01 turbo diesels.

Since this 96 is high mileage, you are probably safe from the #8 cracked block which tends to happen within 10k miles, but can sometimes pop up at the 30-40k mark.

It seems to have the newer style HVAC controls installed.

I'd have a few grand set aside for a fix it fund, to replace any leaky seals, loose ball joints, etc.

You can get a '94 for $20,000 on www.hummernetworkforums.com. It is a very nice one!!!!!!!! There is a thread about it and it is also listed in the marketplace http://www.hummermarketplace.com/vie...php?f=45&t=136

I think you have to be a member to log in to see the forums.
