XM Antenna Upgrade
I need help on how to install an upgraded XM Radio Antenna. Where I live, the stock one only receives the XM channels from 77 and up. On my other vehicles, I have installed the old style computer-mouse sized XM Antenna and they receive all the channels. I have three questions:
1) What is the easiest way to get behind the head unit to plug in the new antenna?
2) What is the connection for the stock XM antenna? (XM has one and two lead connectors and I need this info to order the right one. I realize that the stock antenna has the phone integrated into it and do not wish to change that in any way, other than disconnecting the XM lead at the head unit.
3) What is the safest path to run the antenna and where is the easiest/most practical place to mount it? (I get the punn here, no dirty minded comments please!)
I appreciate any help.
BTW it is blowing 35 knots here and raining the last 2 days thanks to tropical storm Emilia. It is good because we haven't had any rain here since last October - LOTS OF MUD NOW!!!!

Re: XM Antenna Upgrade
The XM module is located above the glove box the antenna lead for XM plugs into this module. The antenna you currently have uses the base for XM and Onstar GPS, the little dingy antenna off the top of the base is the cellular communications antenna for Onstar cell phone usage.
If the old style mouse (or the shark tail) antenn works, I would just install it on the other side of the vehicle, run it into the roof rail, then down the black A-pillar molding, inside the vehicle and attach that to the XM module box. Just leave the current XM on the vehicle and leave the other leads plugged into the Onstar module.

Re: XM Antenna Upgrade
Thanks FStop. So, now for the stupid question, how do I get into and out of the "above the glovebox space" without damaging anything? Do you have a schematic I could use?
I appreciate your words of wisdom and truly enjoyed your post on the cross country road and trail trip!

Re: XM Antenna Upgrade
lance-n,
What antenna are you trying to install?
My XM fades in and out (Veracruz).
Was thinking about changing antennas, but do not know which one.

I use the Terk SR2 antenna on my other vehicles. They do not make them anymore, but can be found on Ebay or Amazon. They are somewhat larger than the current little antennas and they get all channels here, even when it is cloudy or raining.

F5FStop.
How do I get into and out of the "above the glovebox space" without damaging anything?
Do you have access to a schematic I could use?
I laid down under the glove box area this afternoon and did not see an obvious XM Module.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

The glove box will drop down. If you open it, then squeeze the sides it will open beyond the plastic stops. Or you can go in via the center stack.
