better gas mileage?
hey everyone, is there anyway to make the hummer (h2) get between 15 to 20 miles per gallon without doing the diesel conversion? my dad really wants to get one for me and him to share he just wishes it wouldnt get such bad gas mileage. please dont say " you dont buy a hummer for gas mileage..." i know that but i really want one but he wont get one unless it can get a little better gas mileage. so are theres any little tweaks or parts you can do or get. thanks guys

Re: better gas mileage?
Ok, here is idea...
Remove all the seats, take off the spare, side steps, remove any excess body armor. Change the tires to low profile or hwy tires, change out the rims...and the maybe you'll gain one or two points in mpg...
Other then that, not sure...

Re: better gas mileage?
Fill up gas tank at top of a really long hill and coast down as many times as you can while driving very conservativily back up hill, repeat till average
on DIC reads out 20 or more mpg.

Re: better gas mileage?
Just buy an 08 or 09 and do a lot of highway driving. On a trip from Denver to St.Louis last month I averaged 15.6 mpg according to the meter running 70 mph on hwy 70. I was by myself and running with a 40 mph tail wind across Kansas.

When I saw the question, I knew what was coming!
Get a copy of photoshop, doctor the manual, and show it to your dad.

Re: better gas mileage?
Goddamn it, I wrote this big long response and accidently deleted it.
Anyway, bottom line, you won't find any way to get better than 12-14mpg in an H2. (at least an older one)
One way to convince your dad is this....
Figure an H2 averages 12mpg (good luck with that...lol) but comparing it to an average SUV such as a Yukon for instance, they'll get roughly 15mpg on average.
That's 3 mpg difference. Figure the average driver drives 15K miles per year. That's a difference of 750 bucks per year based at 3.00 per gallon (gas isn't quite that high but we're making a point here)
That's 62 bucks per month over what it would cost you extra to drive the H2.
That's 15 bucks per week to drive an H2 in fuel.
Split that between you and your dad and it costs you 7.50 per week extra.
Try that logic.!!
Mark

Re: better gas mileage?
That's the ticket Mark...can't beat $7.50 a week...a weekly lunch ticket is more than that! Dad's love hearing a cheap price, that's probably the best one you can give him when it comes to an H2!
Hope you and your Dad get one and have fun picking one out together...it's what fathers and sons do right? Hey, there's another reason to get one!

Re: better gas mileage?
The new ones with the 6 speed definitely do better than my '06. With the really cold weather we've had and the snow, my lie-o-meter says 11.1 mpg. Yes, it burns a lot of gas but it's comfortable as heck and gets me through all kinds of weather and the mud at construction sites. Even on the highway on long trips I've never gotten over 12.5, but then again, I have a heavy foot.

Re: better gas mileage?
Best I have ever done was 14.4 on a road trip to Florida last summer, I drove the whole tank and averaged around 75mph (my wife gets horrible gas mileage when she drives.... leadfoot and not steady with the throttle). Im sure if you took a highway trip and kept it around 60-65 you could see 15-16mpg but you will get your ass run off the road at those speeds on just about every highway in the U.S....... In the summer with easy mixed driving I can get 12+ but for the most part Im in the 11's (In the really cold weather with warmups Im barely over 10). Firgure an extra 1-2mpg's with the 08 up H2's with the 6 speed trans. The H2 is very heavy, is on a 3/4 ton chassis and is shaped like a brick so there is not much to do other than drive downhill if your looking for good mileage.
Sorry that isnt the exact answer you were looking for but its the cold hard facts

Come to Oreeeegon if you want to drive 55 with no worries!
I drive 90% very short non highway trips and never see above 9 mpg.

Re: better gas mileage?
I?ve got an 08 Tuned and I can average 17- -18 on flat highway going 60-65, over 70 its drops to 15-16 but i have multiple times gone the speed limit (very occasionally) and hit respectable gas mileage. After a week in an H2 or H3, you won?t give a crap. I love my Hummer so much we have three ( x1 H2 x2 H3 ones a alpha) and love all of them. Won?t drive anything else as daily driver. Id say if 1 or 2 MPG is a big deal to your family, pick up an 08-09, but you?ll pay a little more. So the money you?d save buying an earlier year model you?ll put towards that 1-2mpg loss. Either way just buy it.
