He guys new member here. I am going back and forth on buying a sut but still trying to swallow the bad mileage issue.I drive about 500+ miles a week. That being said I love everything else about it. Has anyone ever toy'd with idea of changing the tranny to a new 5 speed, if it even exists? or maybe removing the front drive shaft or would that throw the tranny off?

Why do you want to trade out the transmission? And what exactly are you trying to accomplish?

If gas mileage is the issue, you simply will not achieve the cost/benefit ratio to justify a new transmission. If you are just buying it for a normal vehicle and don't plan to off-road much, maybe changing over to a higher gear in the differentials would make more sense. You might get 3 or 4 MPG by going to a 3.73 and that's probably being very generous.

Removing the front driveshaft is not an option.
Trying to install a 5 speed will not even come close to offering you an increase in gas mileage that is worth the hassle. Figure out how much you'll spend in fuel, and decide if it's worth it to you. If not, you may consider the H3 coming out in a little over a month. It's a little smaller, but gets almost twice the gas mileage.

I believe physics will assist your decision-

6400lbs+ a large V-8 engine+ the aerodynamics of NYC= Nothing will signifactly change the MPG factor.

My advice? By a used econo-cruiser for the commute...Keep the SUT for everything else. Its like nothing else.

I probably put almost as many miles on per week as you do in my SUV. On a trip I can get 13.5 MPG and have on occasion gotten 14 MPG and everything is stock. Not sure what most of you are getting with the SUTs, but you can't ask for much better mileage with an H2.

Thanks for the info. Have any of you guys heard of someone changing their gears to 3.73? I live in florida and don't plan on doing any serious off roading. Only jobsite sand and dirt. and where can i find out more info on this?
Thanks

A good four wheel drive shop can swap them out for you. Just remember one thing, H2's aren't known for their acceleration and a 3.73 is going to make it worse. Nor do I tink it would be worth it.

Forget the 5 speed Alyson. It will not fit. You would need to reconstruct the entire frame and body. You might as well buld something from scratch.

Research the truck. Know what it does well and what it doesn't do well. If it's what you want, buy it, love it for what it is. Have fun!

If MPG is a major consideration, you're looking at the wrong vehicle. If you think you can do anything to change that much, you're wrong. Lots have tried with little success and if you could accomplish it, you're RETIRED for life! So, hummertech had the right idea, look at an H3 or bite the bullet on MPG with an H2.

I played with the math the other day, its not very economical to drive at $.35 a mile . I was doing milage comparisons to figure out what vehicle would be the cheapest to drive based on price and gas at $2.50 a gallon. the Chevy prizm gets about 35-38 mpg vs.h2 at 12.5 mpg. so do the math and find a ride that suits you. at the current rate it will cost me $7140 a yr. in gas for just my commute.

well I guess that 13 mpg on a good day isn't that bad, my 150 supercrew is only getting 15 mpg right now. so i figure it will cost me another 100 bucks or so a month. I think I can handle that.
Went to Dew Hummer yesterday to look around. they had about 6 sut's and they were all around 65 to 69k and one was about 79k. after i awoke and stood back up with a slight sunburn on my face i think i decided to look elsewhere for mine.

Sounds like great justification to me. You can do a lot better than that on the purchase price.
