Extend Warranty Questions
OK...I went back and read all the old threads on the extended warrantys...i was against tham at the time but now I've got 45000 miles on the YELLOW DUCKY and I'm thinking i may have been wrong...
I started collecting all the info and warranty work & pricing I would have paid if it had not been warranty and WOW/DAM/CHIT...that would have been a lot of money had I paid for the work...(remember I have 2 H-3's...)
So...I'm looking for the CURRENT OPINIONS on the GM extended warranty, where to buy/if they are still selling them/who to buy from/what to pay/who is discounting them/will the New Chinese owners have them/personal experiences/
also have anyone had good luck with non-GM warranties/which ones/any problems with the dealer in using them/will the dealer allow payment direct from the warranty company...

Re: Extend Warranty Questions
I have to decide in a couple of days as well. I'm close to 50K and 4 years on my 2006 H3, I checked out gmoutlet.com and their prices seem to be good (remember Hummer has an extra charge on top of the normal GMPP). I also contacted a few months ago another dealer which was mentioned here on the forum ( will get the name when I find it again). Let me know what you find.
Thanks,
Eric

Re: Extend Warranty Questions
I may be in the same boat (thinking about ext. warranty). I'm just glad that the warranty is 4 years and not 3. Mine is up at the end of Oct. (currently have 38k mi).
In the past few months I had a lot of warranty items fixed/replaced (marker light noise, side mirror, falling apart chrome fuel door, rear wiper fluid pump, etc.). Just recently had the check engine light go on. Had the fuel cap message come on too, so thought it was just a broken fuel cap. I've driven with it for a while. Finally got it in today thinking I'd be in and out with a new fuel cap (dealer is about an hour drive away, so it isn't easy) and the service mgr said yep I need a new fuel cap, current one isn't sealing... oh and your rental is coming because you need a new head.
I'm lucky its under 50k mi and under 4 years, or that would have been one heck of an added expense I didn't need right now.

Re: Extend Warranty Questions
Well its been 8 days and only 3 replys...this site is really slowing down...I'm at the dealer now for some alignment work and am going to question the pricing on the GM X-tend-warr here...but will also look at the site mentioned above...My Moms H-3 only has about 14000 miles but her time is up in Jan 2010 also...so I have to worry about 2 H-3's. could be talking about $7500 total for both...a lot to pay but its a gamble either way...Would like to hear morehonest opinions...!

Re: Extend Warranty Questions
Is there is real advantage to the cost of the ext warrentee? The H3 is reliable and for the costs of these plans and the limits imposed...
My plan is up in September and over 4 years there has never been a problem with mine requireing warrentee work. The freedom of taking it wherever I want for issues is important to me.

Re: Extend Warranty Questions
Personally, I'm not a big fan of extended warranties. My daughter had a bad experience with US Fidelis and her Impala, to the point of taking the matter to the Better Business Bureau. I'm taking the money I would have put in the warranty and setting it aside for any future problems. A lot of what I'm going to do depends on what happens to Hummer in the future - meaning whether I keep and maintain this one, or trade it in for a 2010 or 2011.

Re: Extend Warranty Questions
I just bought a GMPP Major Guard warranty, 4 years 40,000 miles with zero deductible for $1,190. My H3 is a 2006 but I only have about 23,500 miles on it now. If you bought the warranty before the vehicle hits 24,000 miles it falls into a much cheaper bracket. Also since I bought it from a Pontiac Dealer I don't think the guy knew about the $330 or whatever surcharge he was suppose to tack on for Hummers.

Re: Extend Warranty Questions
In my opinion extended warranties are very useful provided you have a good one.
It's not just about the best price, it's about the best coverage.
I had an extended warranty with warranty direct when I had my Blazer. Using it for the repairs more than paid for itself.
I had problems with the U joints every year, the rear wiper motor, the 4 wheel drive stopped shifting, broken ball joint, etc.
Getting all of those things fixed over the years I think I paid about $20 out of pocket the warranty covered everything else.

Re: Extend Warranty Questions
Just bought '07 H2 CPO with 6/100,000 Major Guard.
In regards to extended warranties - I will tell you a story.
I got rid of my C55 AMG mercedes just because I was stupid and didn't get extended warranty, when the car was still under factory (last Sep). Everything was fine until this summer, when it wouldn't start after a 10 minute drive. Took it to dealership, turned out it was a crankshaft position sensor, had I known it, I would've replaced it myself. $640 bucks later I found out, that it was a $100 part, the rest was labor. It gets better, they did a MPI for extended warranty, and inspection revealed, that I have leaking valve covers ($1500 to fix), strut arms had to be replaced (another $1200) and since my power tilt was not working either, they priced it out at $600 to fix. I negotiated (very easily to my surprise) it down to $500. Later I found out why. I had to get my tilt fixed, so I could sell it, the rest - let CARMAX deal with it
Anyway, got the tilt fixed, looked at the ticket: $6.30 (yes, that is 6 dollars 30 cents) for the part and $490 labor Now you know, why they could give me a $100 discount - it was all labor!!!
I could've gotten the warranty a year ago, it would've cost me around $2500, but it would have paid for itself in the first year.
Anyway, the main reason I got this Hummer, because of the warranty, oh and they sold me a service contract for $20 a month: free oil changes, filters, brek pads, tire/wheel hazard and so on. I haven't decided yet, if I want to keep it though, I don't think I will have $240 in maintainance per year.

For what it is worth, your mileage may vary.
I had purchased a caddy STS a few years back - GM Certified, 100K and 6 year warranty - best damn warranty I ever had. The dealer was about 70 miles away, trustworthy, so I went back there for service. Every time, he gave be a brand new caddy loaner and waived the time/mileage clause because he knew I traveled some distance. I never paid a dime for service on either the Caddy or the H2 using either warranty company.
To date on the H2 they have:
Replaced both rear view mirrors due to the "folding" problem
Replaced the Intake gasket due to an oil leak
Replaced the broken exhaust manifold bolts/gaskets both sides
Replaced both "ping" sensors under the intake - only one was bad, but they decided to change both while they were there. I offered to pay for the 2nd one, and they wouldn't hear of it.
I will say, your service writer has a lot do to with how the warranty is handled.
Anyway, happy with both.

Re: Extend Warranty Questions
Looks like a lot of us are in the same boat, coming up on that 4 year / 50k...
I tried to get as much warranty work completed as I'm right at the end.. I think I'm at 48,830 mi. now.
I'm glad I'm gettting the wheels taken care of now, as the corrosion was getting bad.
Just deciding on which warranty would be the best for me. Any other feedback out there for this thread? I'd still like to hear other experiences!

Re: Extend Warranty Questions
This is the best coverage - Major Guard from GM.
And this is the cheapest place for it.
http://gmextendedwarrantystore.com/
However, I heard somebody got warranty at non-Hummer dealer, and they didn't charge the "hummer" surcharge, so he saved like $300
