New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Monday announced "Summer Streets" an experimental initiative whereby a 6.9-mile swath of Manhattan's East Side will be closed to traffic for several Saturday mornings this August







For three August mornings, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has declared "Summer Streets," The New York Times reports. A nearly 7-mile swath of east Manhattan will be closed to traffic from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. on the second, third and fourth Saturdays of the month.

The auto-free zone will run alongside the MTA's 4-5-6 subway route, from the Brooklyn Bridge through Astor Place and Union Square all the way to 72nd Street on the Upper East Side.

The Times says that fitness, yoga and dance classes will be held in the streets along the route, and that bicycle rentals will be available.

Okay, crap like this pisses me off. It's a road not a playground, parade field, or anything else. Drivers are paying to use that road with their vehicle registration fees, inspections fees, and gas taxes and this guy wants to essentially steal the road and give to non-drivers, that's crap. If I was on the NY Dept. of Trans. I'd say " well, if drivers can't use the road then you won't get the funds to repair it with since your misuseing them." See how quickly he changes his tune then.

Great. Saturday and Sunday mornings are about the only time you can drive down those streets and actually get anywhere.

Who the HELL is going to do yoga or anything else for that matter on the 150? summer asphalt of NYC? Stupid jackasses.

Tank - The NY state dept. of transportation is only slightly less inept than the NY MTA (trains/ subways). Which means they would never think to do something halfway as intelligent as you suggested.

If they are going to do that than they should close off Central Park to pedestrians and let 4 X 4 's go offroading for the day. Fair is fair!

Actually they should still allow pedestrians into the park, why not go all out and make it a 4 by party and have a couple of hundred kegs complete with "wet-tee shirt" or "get naked" contest?! For a weekend!
