I know I've gotten that when my traction control kicks in. I think it means the vehicle is compensating for slippery road surface. Maybe you were on a patch of oil.

Haven't seen that message, but I'm pretty sure its a "warning" to remind you that there is a potential for ice and to be extra careful by looking at the mirror to figure out what it wants.

I heard somewhere that ice warnings on mirrors are set for 38 degrees for some reason, maybe in case the ice hasn't completely melted yet...

It no big secret...geea you warm waather people would think it is armageddon.

Mine comes on whenever I try to take off too fast on snow or ice. It just lets you know there is a slip. It may also come on when it is cold but not automatically. I have seen it not come on in sub zero temperatures.

For your Californians and Foridians that sub zero is when the temperature actually gets down more than 32 degrees below freezing. AKA Muey Frio"

Actually, it comes on when the temperature indicated falls below 38 degrees. It will flash for several minutes then stop. The Expedition I drive at work is the same way, it has nothing to do with the traction control.

Our Montero Sport mirror does it too when gets cold. Comes on showing "ICE" and then goes to whatever the temperature is.

I thought it was odd the first time I saw it as well. It seems to flash forever before it turns off...I'm always thinking: "I get the point, I just want to see the darn temperature."

NEOCON1 got it. It has no connection to the traction control system. My TJ, with a non-Chrysler, self-installed temp mirror did the same thing.

As said b4, it refers to a falling temperature below 38 degrees, it will kick on early as the road or bridge may be colder. This is a good thing if you are driving in a cold rainstorm, as you may think all is well until your trailer tries to pass you!

In any case steer to the North when it happens and your mirror will compliment your ride.

Water reaches its highest density at 4 degrees celcius that is 39.2 Farenheit. If the ground is cold at that time, like permafrost or a bridge etc. the water can easily crystallize & freeze.
Generally speaking, when it butt freezing cold, you know it! When you are driving a whole day from a warmer climate and you get into a sub 4 degree zone, the little warning can save your life as it may make you drive a little more carefully.
I think it is activated fom 39.2 to 32 degrees....
