HummerBabe is off the scale
Default Subercharger vs. Turbocharger

Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on which would be a better option for my H3? Any help is appreciated! Thanks

Got to be the Supercharger... useable power regardless of what you are doing and the cheapest of the two... Turbo has the "dreaded" lag (foot to the floor, car moves ok, and then WHAM.. it takes off) - even with the most modern installs... i.e. with a Turbo, you're crawling some rocks and need to give it some gas at some point BANG Turbo kicks in = WTF & OMG (depending on your setting between 2000 - 35000 RPM) and you get what you didn't want... quick moves!..

The supercharger gives a little less power, but it IS useable power... it's there through the rev range - ALL the way through.

AND.. Turbo's WILL fry and may even fry your engine.. in a previous life I had some High performance cars built at the factory with Turbo's and they did all let go.

I dunno about the US, but where I'm from (Scotland) it's not too warm... at night after a hammering my Cosworths (use Google) you could lift the hood and see the Turbo glowing red hot... and I mean RED HOT... you won't have that with a Supercharger. (And it takes less space under the hood!)

Nearly bought a supercharger for my Porsche.. but I got rid of it and bought a HUMMER.. never looked back either!!!!

Supercharger or V8 H3... same result!

Cheers

, supercharger would probably be a better idea, even though both are good. The reason being the range of power.

I run a turbo on my Cummins which is fine hauling big loads. I even know some guys running duals. You do have to watch EGT's when pulling hard, just part of the deal.
Aluminum parts melt around 1300 degrees. It comes on and builds as needed. Supercharger is instant on and big dollars. You going to drag that thing now??

Gas engine...supercharger. Give you instant power, turbo take some RPMs to wind up, and you don't want to be revving the engine on boulders to get some power.
Diesels work better with turbos since they already have tons of low-end torque and need a boost at higher RPMS.
Drive a Dmax turbo, the thing pulls a house, and around 2700 rpms, when the turbo really hits the boost, it jumps.
Just my opinion.

Supercarger on a gas engine does the same as a turbocharger on a deisel engine. It runs all the time forcing more air into the intake.

A Turbo on a gas engine just kicks in when you romp on the gas giving a boost when excelerating.

If I were to pick one I'd go for the Supercharger. Increase power across the power band.
If you decide to drop a deisel engine in your H3, don't waste your time on a deisel engine without a turbo.

Turbo relies on exhaust gases to increase boost, supercharger relies on a belt. Exhaust gas build up does not happen immediately to spin the turbine enough to create a large amount of boost. I have driven a turbo DMAX and max boost is not until around 2700 rpm, off the line there is almost NO boost.
Possibly some other diesel engine turbos work differently, as I know some gas engine turbos create boost quicker.

Yeah Man,
Supercharging....much more better...and..you can smoke your tires real good from a dead stop. Pic of my 86 Vette with a Carroll Supercharger and
Gasious Water Injection system. A fun Tire shreader...

Not sure if any boost is good for the H3. Boosting while rockcrawling isn't fun especially with a front axle like ours. SC are great for muscle cars for off the line kick boosting all the way through the power curve, and my Audi is turboed and boosts right around 2000-2200, which is typically the engine speed when Im exiting a turn in mountains and really whips that thing around and out of turn. Lots of fun. I rather have a 4 banger and dual transfer cases and huge gears when crawling. Sand is a good element for a having a supercharger. Snow, not so much.

The I5 for one thing just isn't made from high enough strength components to run more than 5-8psi on either a sc or turbo. Even if you could find enough room to run an innercooler you're getting to maybe 8-10psi. About 60 to 70 hp at the crank. Sooooooooooooooo not worth the maybe 15k you'll go before you rip the valve spring retainers off. If you want more power you're better off doing the small V8 swap. Much easier to modulate power and it will cost you the same amount in the long run. Not to mention the front diff that has already had its share of problems. And I've already ripped a front drive shaft. My summer car is a PT vert' turbo. It's modded to run 20psi and I would not want that kind of kick in the 3. That kind of power would throw it sideways on the trail to easily.
