Gearing in snow

I took the H3 up to the mountains and into some snow. Not really deep snow but the road is gravel/dirt with about half foot of snow on top. The H3 did great on the snow just a couple of anxious slips. I put the H3 in 4 hi and 4 hi locker and didn't see a difference in traction. What do you folks recommend? Sometimes I got it up to 35 MPH if that matters.

I haven't had the "pleasure" to drive in snow, yet (hope I never do really), but how did you get the rear to lock in 4-wheel HI? It is supposed to lock only in 4-Wheel LO.
I do know if you have a complete different engine calibration when switch to 4-wheel LO, so that might prove to be a big advantage in wet, slippery, nasty, no good, rotten snow.

I pushed the second button from the far left. The one with the 4 up arrow and little pad lock.

That just locks you into 4 HI I think it just lock the front hubs

I think he meant 4-high-lock, not locker. I recomend using 4-high-lock (what you were in) in that type of snow-driving situation. That locks the differential in the transfercase so the front and rear wheels spin in unison.

Absolutely. There is no need to put the added wear & tear on the center diff when not necsessary. The only reason for the diff is to make it possible to have 4-wheel drive while on the road.

I have to admit, it is early, but this thread is confusing me.

There are no front hubs as in other systems.

HummerGuy and Odamo are correct, the planatery differential in the transfer case distributes the power to the axles. In normal 4-wheel drive it allows for 40/60 front/rear split. In 4-HI lock, the diff distributes the power to the high/low sleeve.

The E-locker will automatically unlock over 20 mph, and cannot be engaged except in 4-LO. If it engages above that speed, and in 4-HI, there is a problem. If you push the locker button in 4-HI or above 20MPH it will flash but not engage.

We just had our first really good snow/ice storm yesterday here in Wyoming, so my H3 finally got its winter test. I have to say that she did great. I had it in 4-HI the entire time with no loss of traction at all. Climbed the ice covered hill to my house like a goat (as the mini-vans were playing bummer-cars with one another). While its a darn heavy rig to stop on ice, I think she'll do well in the cold muck.
