Default Onstar Red Light

Last night I noticed this. The Onstar mirror, there is a light on either side of the buttons across the bottom of the mirror. The light on the right is now red. Anyone know what this means? No Sat signal? It is on all the time now, no matter my location. Thanks.

OnStar goes through factory head unit.
Red lights on probobly because it is not functional.
You need to get a OnStar module hooked up to get it working.

I like the peace of mind having OnStar.
The phone comes in handy also

if you have switched out the radio you need a module.

the red signifies that there is a problem with the onstar system. it can be numerous things, ranging microphone being inoperative to losing communication with vehicle computers.

try pressing the blue button and see if someone answers, if they do, ask them for help, they'll do a remote diagnostic.

if not take to dealer. could be cuzed by something other than onstar and may be a problem.

Yes, it was confusing the issue because I wrote it up wrong. The Onstar has worked for the 3 months since I put the new stereo in. It was jut the other night when I swapped out the the steering wheel for the leather version that I noticed the red light. Sorry 'bout that. I thought the red light meant that Sat signal was lost. I was going to try to disconnect the battery and hopefully reset it. If not I have dealer visit scheduled for brakes and have alignment post-New Torsion Bar install, and will have them take a look then. Thanks.

How did you manage to swap for a leather wheel...is this through a dealer...the same wheel...what's it costing....I was thinking of doing that...

Leather Lux version of H3 steering wheel was approx 150 dollars from GM parts direct (part number - 15793345). I really like the new wheel! Simple swap out, except maybe it makes the Onstar red light come on?

Mark my words. Pretty soon they'll be using India for OnStar support operators.

Have you discovered what the problem was yet?
Also do you have a picture of the steering wheel you have, I went to the website but there was no picture or even a description.

Now for the rest of the story....

So, the other night I swapped out the plastic steering wheel for the leather Lux version. I pulled the SIR and HORN fuse before starting. I put the new wheel on and replaced the fuses. I noticed that the Onstar light was on (what I didn't notice was the airbag light was on, too. For the next several days I rode my old school Yeti everywhere since the weather finally got nice. Tonight, I finally got a chance to take a look a the H3.... When I was buttoning up the leather wheel swap, a friend of mine stopped by with some parts and a couple six packs. We did some work on his Defender in the driveway, had a few beers, and I remembered I hadn't put the fuses back in from the wheel swap. So, I did so on my way in for the night. Turns out I put the SIR fuse in the wrong open fuse slot (the slot I put it into was marked Spare-4). I just pulled the fuse and put it in the correct slot. And, what do you know - my Onstar is working and the airbag light is off. Hopefully I'll put my new torsion bars in the correct holes this weekend... no beers until afterwards. Let the flaming begin!!

By the way, the leather wheel was worth the 150. It is not as "thick" as the plastic wheel, and feels nicer in my hands (girlfriend just said not to say "feels nicer in my hands" on the Elcova forum, for fear of reprisal). LOL.

I know when it's something so simple it can be humbling but it's still a nice feeling knowing you did no major damage. When I was installing my marker lights and light bar I had just finished everything, put all the parts back and closed the hood, hopped in the cab and cranked the key....DEAD!!! After 2 hours of pulling everything apart and inspecting the wiring over and over and Just when I thought it was going to be time to call the tow truck and cough up some major bucks for the dealer to tell me i'm a moron that blew out something major I realized that when I put the fuse box back together I did not seat the top portion with the lower part
