Default MSD ignition unit

Hi,all.
I did a search here and online and didn't find any info so I will ask.

Has anyone installed a MSD ignition unit on the H2? If so did it help with low end torque? I have used them in many other trucks, and the system has always rocked. I'm not sure if it is compatible with the H2 6.0 vortec engine. I have use both the red 6a and green 6a off road unit w/ rev limiter in the past.

I'm still working on figuring out the list of mod's I am going to do in the next couple of months, any input would be great.

Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

the way it's done on a 6.0 is to buy 8 of the MSD coils ,at about $650.00 it is IMHO TOO FUC*ING HIGH for what you get. but what the hell do I know ?

Multiple spark discharge for your Gen III engine!
Thanks to a different connector, not all Gen III engines will accept the original MSC coils. For those applications, MSD offers these MSC II coils! These coils have all of the same advanced features as the MSC coils, plus they mount in the factory location and accept the factory connectors. These coils produce a higher voltage and multiple spark discharge.

Thanks for the response.

I didn't realize I couldn't use a regular MSD unit on this engine. I have a couple MSD boxes laying around thought I might be able to use one. Oh well guess I'll look into the coil pack and see what they are about. In my past experience with MSD units they help with low end rpm and also give extra mileage. Worth looking into I think. Thanks again for the info

Just to backup IRA51, he is correct about the coils.

Before buying the multiple spark coils please read this.

I purchased the MSD 82478 8-coil kit a month ago.

After buying it, and after reading this thread, I realize that I should have purchased the 82468 kit, which would have fitted the H2 without the need to make some minor modifications, but I understand that the coils are the same, it is just the housing that changes.

When I fitted the coils I had misfire problems, and the car was reporting the PO300 (multiple missfire) and the PO353 (faulty coil #3) codes. After swapping the coil at position 3 for an original coil, I was still getting the same codes.

I called MSD support, and talked with Basilio Chavez. He suggested that I try using less coils on each bank, as he claimed that there could be a problem with the power lines. After trying this (2 MSD coils on each side), I had the same problem. Talked again to him today, and he says he will talk with his design engineers and that we should talk again tomorrow.

I believe that there is some incompatibility here, and I would not buy them until this has been sorted out.

Has anyone else fitted these coils to the H2? Mine is a 2005-model H2.

Michael, code 300 can be triggered by several different serious performance enhancing mods causing this "false" codes. IE: cams or ignition upgrades.

This is why the Diablosport programmer includes the option to turn the trigger off for code 300. Once you disable the 300 test mode, you should no longer get code 353 as well.

Thanks for the heads up Michael.

Tomp what do you mean by "faulse" code? Do you mean a code that doesnt exist ie...attach to an actual problem.
Or that the computer doesn't understand how to read the multi spark / hotter coil and it just bugs and pops out code 300?

Thanks for all the responses .

You may have done this but, when you go to the more powerful coils You need to go to high performance plug wires. 8mm or something like that. I like Taylor wires and you can get them at most performance stores around any town. I have seen the factory wires not able to carry the stronger current and the wire basicly allows an arc to metal causing a miss.

The things that makes me scratch my head is you swapped out to a stock coil and same thing happened unless i missed as to which coil pack you made switch with.

It may or may not be a problem. You have to determine what you are dealing with...IE: if you installed HP cam or you have an ignition problem or is it related to a mod etc.

Taz:
Simultaneously with the MSD ignition coils I also purchased the MSD 8.5mm superconductor spark plug wires (MSD 32829). Unfortunately (as in another thread on this same site), once installed the boots are too close to the headers, and started to show signs of melting. So I had to replace them again with the standard wires until I find a solution for this problem.

When I got the PO353 code I swapped out the 3rd coil for the original one, and still got the same PO353 code - that's what I meant. The car works fine for some 5-10 mins, but then starts to miss.

Update:

MSD technical support asked me for the model numbers of the original coils on my H2 (12558693 H6T55171ZC). It seems that they then went out and bought one, and have now determined that they do NOT have a coil compatible with the ones on my H2. They say thay MAY have one in the future.

So I now have to get a refund......

Anyone else interested in these coils should call MSD support with the serial numbers of their current coils to check compatibility.

It's a good thing I'm a cheapskate and didn't get those coils ,the price was the only thing that stoped me . try the heat sleeves on the wires or use header wrap and no more burnt wires .or if you realy want to do it right send your headers to JET HOT Coatings or buy a set of cermic coated headers .your engine compartment will be alot cooler too.
