Default Thoughts about this H1?

A friend of mine is selling this H1 and I'm thinking about buying it. I would like to get some opinions about it.

First, the pictures:

Now the story..

It has 63,000 miles and it's a 1995. It has the updated A/C. All fluids were changed last year with only about 1,000 miles driven since then. Tires are about 40-50%. It has a snorkel with the roof rack that has ramps that roll out the back. New starter installed last year. It does NOT have the U/C protection.

He has planned on keeping it, but has decided to sell and build a bigger house.

He has told me he would sell for $30,000.00... When I drove it, it seemed noisey (road noise) and kinda felt like driving an old worn out pick-up, but the steering is tight. (Not sure how other H1's feel when driving, so this may be normal and I'm used to the H3.)

Can someone give me a little feedback?

Thanks for the replies! *cheers*

OK heres the scoop on the 95 model year.

I had a 95 and my issues were common but needed top be replaced or repaired. Your RIG is now 13 years old so it needs a bit of help.

1- Ambient Temp Switch

2- Brakes

3- Power Steering Pump

4- CTIS Plumbing

5- Heater Core (OUCH) you cannot even get a 98 or earlier HVAC system the cost of replacment is $1500. HUMMER or any Hummer parts replacment place will NOT I repeat SELL YOU a older HVAC system unless its used. (Good Luck ever finding that they are like Gold lined with Silver)
BEWARE BEWARE BEWARE............

6- Geared Hub Seals (Ouch again) needed however.

7- Windshield Washer Pump because the 95 washer pump SUCKS. I can spit out my window farther that that stupid thing spits water on the window.

8- Window Frame Seals - you will see why

9- Windshield Frame Seal "Ditto"

10- All your marker lamps should be replaced as well they are all pretty corroded. Expensive to replace. GET LED ones if you do replace them.

11- The Door locks suck. Get them greased up real good and they should work better.

12- The Power Windows go up SLOOOOOOW because the Window frame seals are usually shot. Hence replacment

13- Keyless Entry is goofey

14- Door lock actuaters usually need replacing as well.

15- UPGRADE to 2001 Mirrors is a MUST. The previous mirrors suck all the way around.

15- SO much more to list........ However when I got done fixing my 95 it was working and looked like new. It cost alot to get it thier as well so choose your mods and upgrades carefully. When you own an H1 it is costly and unless you dont mind it in the shop at least once a month than I say go for it. However by the time you are done with mods and ups you could of bought a 6.5 TD 99 and newer. I myself have owned 3 H1's and would NEVER EVER buy any other year earlier than a 2003. My other posts list the reasons why the 03 and later are important.

GOOD LUCK

My other posts about the 03 and later.

1- Power Door Lockouts (Fixed in 2003)
2- Exterior Marker lamps are stil recessed into the body (Fixed in 2002)
3- Wheels were 16.5 anf 17" 2 Piece Star Rims. (Later 2002's had the 2 PC Forged Beadlock Runflats Rims)
4- The Lockers are the Same 2001-2002 Detroit Mechanical Locker (2003 Eaton Electronic Loacker Takes Over :-))
5- 2001 have the 8 cyl block crack issue check the vin number to verify if it was part of the build issues 137ZA is bad :-)
6- Make sure the Geared hub seals have been changed if over 20K and the brakes are fresh (Expensive job)
7- Make sure you do not have any HVAC issues with the 2001-2002 they still had issues until 2003 (Updated GM Components in 2003)
8- Lastly where I got burned on all 3 of my H1's was the pwer steering box. It leaks but only needed a clamp replacment. make sure if it leaks you check the clamp.

Anything else you want to know please feel free to ask. If i was going to get another H1 I would not get anything besides the 03 it was the H1's best year mechanically. Those words are right out of a Hummer H1 builders mouth)

Peter,

Thanks for the GREAT post!!!

I know the a/c system has been upgraded to the new style (last year).

Not sure about a lot of the other items.. I will have to ask..

What do you think would be a fair $$ amount for this particular H1?

With having a new H3, a 2003 or newer H1 is way out of my budget..

I was just talking to the wife and a $53k price tag on a 2001 H1 got her pissed.. lol

I would not pay more tha $25K

Right off the bat you need the following.

Tires X 4 = $1500 Installed I recommend Toyo open country however the MTR'S look the best on the H1 IMO.

New Mirrors = $500

New Hummer H1 2003 Rims 17" 2 Piece = $3000 The 95 Steel Rims are 16.5" and ugly again IMO.

Brakes = $600 with labor both F and R.

Geared Hub seals = $600 with Labor

Total of needs in my opinion to get the Rig looking very sharp are approx $6,200. Now if it needs anything else I listed you may need around 3 to 5,000 more. At the end of the day with all the mods and ups with 10K in the rig you now have an AWESOME H1 ready for the show and Off-Road for $35,000. NOT BAD NOT BAD at all.

Your Rig is the Gas model, it only has 1 gas tank :-) 5.7 liter 350. Much easier to get parts and worked on. Thats a plus. Very underpowered in my opinion. Add an exhaust for sound and maybe a bit if perf gain.

One thing to remember abou H1's. They are bad to the bone, so don;t get me wrong.

The purchase price is only the starting point!!!!

You will be dumping money on that truck quicker than your wife can yell at you for spending the money.

Maint. on an older H1 like that will a new hobby for you.

Be cautious before you jump in.

30k doesn't seem too awful bad to me, not having personally seen this truck. Maybe high by a couple of k, but close anyway.

A LOT of your decision should be based on:

How much can you spend on a truck purchase
How you plan on using the truck
How much of the work on the truck you plan on doing yourself

Just remember, buying an H1 is like buying a Cessna. The purchase price is just the starting point. Maintenance is a lot more frequent than other vehicles and neglecting it can lead to rather ugly and expensive repairs later on. If you plan on offroading much, I highly suggest you learn to do most of your own work. Not only will you know your truck better, but you will be much better prepared when (not if) things go wrong.

I agree with the others. I reccomend walking a cautious line with any used H1. If its 10+ years old, I would budget 10K to bring it fully up to spec.

I would tend to agree with everything that has been stated above. I went from a 06 H3 to my 97.5 H1 almost 8 months ago. I do perform a lot of the maintenance and repairs myself, but it seams like I have to do something about once a month. No mater what H1 you buy (if you are like most people and can?t afford an 03, 04 or 06) you will be getting an older vehicle. You have to go into this with decision with your eyes wide open. You will have maintenance and part replacement costs on top of your purchase price. Now after that you do have some control over how much these cost are. I will not take my truck to the dealer unless it is unavoidable. They wanted to charge $125 for an oil change, It cost me something like $25-$30 in materials and is easier than changing the oil on the H3. If you do your own work and shop around for a good deal on parts you can keep the price down. I would say I have been spending between $100-$200 a month on maintenance or repairs. This is in addition to new wheels tires etc...

I bought my truck for $32K I think $30k for a 95 is high. If this is your price range I would diffidently keep shopping and get a Turbo.

Keep a few grand handy for repair. I don't like 95's personally. we sold one that was nothing but non-stop problems
