Default Door handles- are these covers or not??

I was told at the Hummer dealer that to get these off I would need to unbolt from behind the door panel.

However, it looks like these are Chrome overlays that are applied with adhesive.

The reason they need to be removed is because I am powder coating all the chrome to black.

It seems that even if I did remove the entire piece that the black plastic would come with the chrome pieces, and that would make it impossible to bake the powder coat on.

Any suggestions? It seems I should be able to somehow remove these overlays... or no??

They look to be the 3m tape on cover type and with some light heat from a hair dry and some goo gone you should be able to remove them. the ones that you have to remove the door pannels and all that are the full buckets you would not be able to see the black plastic at all it would be chrome.

Sorry to hear your getting away from the bling we could be twins.

Without looking at them I don't think anyone will be able to give you an accurate answer. Maybe you could try using a heat gun(or hair dryer) to test your adhesive theory. Most likely they're going to be bolted.

Send me a pm with your location. Maybe I can look at them in person. I'm in L.O.

Stuck on with 3M tape maybe ? That is how it looks in the pics.

Might try a hair dryer to loosen the tape and get a piece of fishing line behind them and work the line behind it to remove. This was how I removed the H2 emblems from the front doors of my truck. WD40 is good at removing the excess tape.

Just a thought

Dammit DRTY and wingn69 , ya beat me to the post

THanks all. I just got back from the powder coater and they appear to be stick ons. Hoping I can get them off. I've got a heat gun so ill give it a whirl.

Drtyfun come on over. I'm at hwy 26/217 in cedar hills. Ill be stripping the truck in prep for all the black powdercoat within he next few days. Ill PM you the exact address.....

Does the parts like light guards and front grill guards come with a slight texture? ? Not sure which way to go on he powdercoat but I am leaning towards a slight texture.

Looks like you've already confirmed this, but the door pull is factory standard chrome, and the rectangular cover is the overlay...

The factory black brush guard has a slight texture, but the rear factory black tailamp guards have smooth matte finish.

OK. Since I am having all this stuff powder coated ill have the choice. I can't make up my mind on what to txtre and what not to.

I am thinking:
Nerf bars....txtr
Rear light guards...txtr
Gas filler cover....no txtr
Tow hooks front and rear...no idea
Hood handles...no idea...leaning towards txtr
Front grill guard....txture
Side marker covers...no txtre
Not sure about the door handle covers ......will they go back on after I strip them off??
Front lower grill cover...no idea

I'd probably go all texture or all not...with black, a little texture makes things look interesting and different. As for the door handle covers, you'll probably have permanent adhesive damage on the plastic door bucket when you take those off. But you may be lucky and have it come off completely - the problem is the bucket is plastic.

Thanks Brian, for your input. I got it all stripped yesterday and have a maybe pile and a txtr pile. Lol. You don't think all txtre would look bad huh?

As far as the door handle covers they came right off with no damage to the oem buckets. The worst part was having to take the entire bumper off just to get the damn tow hooks off.

I'm going to griots all the trim in down time so that should spruce it up some.

More opinions on txture welcome!

I think it would look fine as long as the texture isn't too pronounced. If it was the same texture as rhino-lining, I'd say no way...but if it was just a simple texture like what is on the OEM black brush guard, I think it'd look fine.

Thanks... it would be like the texture on the rock rails....

I'd say I've narrowed it down to one or the other, but the Gobi FJ roof rack is powder coated with a slight texture and that is the roof rack I'll be getting.

Really.... if you look at the OEM plastic there is a good mix of texture / no texture going on already.

Damn decisions....

Gobi makes good stuff - but I wouldn't order an "FJ" rack for your "H2"....
