Default Trans cooler

Well my trans cooler in the radiator broke yesterday an I had it repaired today I just had an aftermarket cooler installed an had everything flushed Trans & Coolant I don't know if it hurt the hoses but I'm goint to wait an see if they need replaced if one or two go bad I'll do all of them then. My trans works just fine no slipping an it never over heated so I was hopeing it was OK an it seems it. The shop that did the repair I'm not to sure about, the man that did the repair said it was all done an I could go with it, well when I looked at it there were no plugs in the radiator where he removed the trans lines form, I told him they needed to be pluged and he said NO THEY DON'T THERE IS NOTHING HOOKED UP THERE ANYMORE. So I said look if trans fluid can leak into the coolant from that cooler WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THAT COOLANT CAN'T LEAK OUT FORM THAT COOLER, he just got a dumb look on his face an said I'll go get 2 plugs for the Radiator. I didn't want to get smart with the guy but he was really starting to TIC me off. I sure hope things are good with this thing now I'm getting tired of spending money on this thing.
I can say for sure never again a GM PRODUCT FOR ME.

your going to find that all brands German,Jap,Korean and American have design flaws, vendor QC problems, and other **** ups . there is no perfect brand . buy a Land Rover and see what bad is .without knowing how many miles you have and your service history it might be a lack of maintinance that caused the problem . you should fush youe cooling system every 50000 miles and put in a new thermostat and new Dexcool . did you buy it new or used ? someone could have been topping off the cooling system with hard tap water .

I must have been one of the lucky rover owners. Had a 98 Discovery for 10 years that I sold to get my H2. In the past year I have had much more warranty work done to the H2 than 10 years of Rover ownership!

This Hummer has 82000 miles on it the coolant was done twice already,(now I should say three times) once at 34000 when it needed a new water pump an again at 75000 when it needed another new waterpump. The service on this hummer could not be any better, and no there was never any TAP water put into it. GM's COOLANT is CRAP an they know it and do nothing about it.
As for the LANDROVER my wife has one 173000 miles an never an issue with this other than she is hard on Brakes (this is with every car she has owned)
this hummer has been nothing BUT issues, till now because Now I am going to build this Hummer the way I want it. I pulled it in the shop last night an started.
It will come out of the shop with a new crate 454 engine an 400 turbo tranny, and a throttle with real linkage to work the injection. I have planed on doing this for a while and should have done it before getting it fixed this time so the fix yesterday was another waste of money. Everything done yesterday is now on the garage floor and in buckets, engines hanging from the hoist. In about 2 weeks we will see how my version of a hummer works.

Chopper, just wondering why if you have a place and the ability to tear everything out and replace the engine/tranny, etc... Why would you pay someone to do a simple radiator replacement????

Did you reuse your old radiator??? If its a new radiator then you really might want to leave the plugs out of the trans cooler side. Or just fill the trans cooler in the radiator with coolant and plug it.

I cant imagine you would reuse the bad radiator tough..???

I agree.... there was no need to put plugs in the radiator... if they did any work on the radiator, chances are it was drained and there couldn't possibly be any amount worth anything to be in the radiator.

TIME partner TIME I really did not have the time to do the repair but after it was all done and sitting here at home the more I thought about it the more it TIC'ed me off, so I decided to cancel a trip and just take the time an do what I've wanted to do for awhile now. Yes I do have a shop equipet more than well enough to do this job, we've built things in my shop from funny car to an exp single seat plane.
By the way as of tonight the engine an trans an transfer case are down on the mounts, far from done but thier in there.

As for using the old radiator yes I did have them use the old radiator, nothing wrong with the rad itself just the trans cooler inside the rad. AND YES you must plug the old cooler in the rad. REMEMBER THE TRANNY FLUID LEAKED INTO THE RADIATOR, WELL THAT MEANS THERE IS A HOLE IN THAT COOLER and if trans fluid could leak into the radiator now the coolant can leak OUT THE SAME HOLE IN THE TRANS COOLER so you plug the cooler an then the coolant will just fill up the coil for the OLD tranny cooler and NOT LEAK OUT, cause it's now pluged.

IRA 51 I never thought my mileage was bad to start with do you think your's is bad. I really think that when done I will get a little better than before.

I can relate to that. I remember about 15 years ago I bought a Corvette in Brandywine red that had just a little bit of clearcoat delamination on the fuel door. I promised my wife I would live with it for a while before diving into a project. That lasted about two days. I could not stop looking at that little area on the fuel door. Vette was completely stripped down to glass, put an Ecklers ZR-1 style bumper on it and repainted it it torch red.

Post some pics of the project!!!!

my mileage is 12 mpg ,the 03 Avalanche 2500 4x4,496 ci my ex wife (thank god that bitch is gone)had got 12 also . so maybe you mileage will be the same if you have an overdrive trans . I wasn't aware a turbo 400 was made with an overdrive . also I would bet the big block engine would be harder to cool and need a bigger radiator than the 6.0 you removed. while I'm sure it can be done ,it looks like a lot of work and money for the end result . between the computer and exaust alone it ought be interesting if you want to pass emmisions .

Good Luck with the swap Chopper, would luv to see progress pix as you go. Did you consider an 8.1L with a 4spd auto??

Would also agree with you on plugging the cooler, If it can leak in to the coolant, Coolant can leak out!!

Sadly I deal with crap like this everyday.
