HID lights in the DRL slot
Ok I still want to do this. Theres not a direct plug and play HID kit for the DRL slot cause its 3157 low powered bulbs. What I want to do is buy the exact same kit I have for the headlights 9007 HIDs with ballasts and put another kit of the same kind in the DRL slots and point the bulbs lower than where headlights hit so they light up the ground area.
So my question to you technical guys is can I plug a 9007 HID kit into the DRL slot. I know it wont be plug and play but could we pull power from somewhere else and have still work, or maybe work on a switch?
What other options to get HID in there except the $1000 kit from piaa?
Thanks!

Re: HID lights in the DRL slot
the cheapest way is buy a few sylvania bulbs. all different sizes and see which one is the closest to the 3157 bulbs ... this is what I was going to do...

Re: HID lights in the DRL slot
thought just occured to me....is there anything state law wise that would preclude you from changing the DRL's?

that could melt the lenses of the DRL lights, this has happened to people before. HID lights are supposted to run alot cooler.

Re: HID lights in the DRL slot
Everything you want to do is easily achieved. A few things of interest:
1. Just because HID's run cooler than incandescents or halogens, that doesn't necessarily mean that they will not melt the lenses/housings. They still get quite hot!
2. Figure out what your use will be (if fog, FORGET HID. If off road or driving, fine.)
3. Legal: No U.S. state mandates DRLs, although some require drivers to operate vehicles with lights on in bad weather.
4. Now that you're past the plug and play stage, your 2 primary issues will be:
1. finding a lamp housing that will comfortably fit in the confines of your valance lamp nest and
2. Ensuring that the attachment pod or bolt can anchor to a hole you drill in the metal bumper while keeping the lamp head centered in the valance nest aimed in the direction you desire. It will require a bit of trial and error. There are some lamps known to fit (e.g. the pricey PIAA you mentioned (600HID, 610HID). And there are known halogens which will fit (e.g. PIAA, Cibie Trango). You may want to take measurements of the housings which fit and extrapolate those to available HID models. Good luck and please keep us posted. Thanks, Jimmy!

Re: HID lights in the DRL slot
My HIDs in the headlights are the brighest things I've ever seen. If I do the same for the DRLs just aim them lower than the headlights I just see alot more light and the lower areas lite up alot more, dont you think? Also I live in Ohio not any mountains here or really fog ever, I just want more light.
What I want to do is just put the bulbs in the DRL OEM housing, if I burn the lenses well then thats the cost to play ball and then I'll replace them and go another route and I can just put the extra set of HIDs on one of my h2 limos. But its just a bulb and the ballasts get mounted behind, maybe we have to cut a slight hole for the bulbs to fit in and then get make them secure but I think it would work. After all the ebay kits for $100 arnt too expensive to test out , and I can always use em on one of the limos if it dont work out. What do you think?
Thanks tower!

Re: HID lights in the DRL slot
Sounds like you know the potential risks and can live with the potential consequences. So go ahead and fab' something up. Then you can teach all of us how to do it.
BTW, where did you get the LED's you are using in the DRL nests?
