I'm not saying there are any "safety issues", Jeeps just don't have a history of good crash test scores. Real world, they come in around average. Personally, I want all the protection I can get.

Interesting. I didn't know that, but I don't know much abou the later models. I had just assumed that the Rubi added the lockers and performance enhancers, but I dind't know that they had improved the weak points.

The cell connection with Ron wasn't great, but it appears they had a
great day wheeling yesterday interrupted only by Wayne not quite getting
up the apparently TJ-unfriendly eight-foot ledge of an obstacle called,
I think, the "Widowmaker." And by "not quite" I mean, "flopped down
hard on his side getting wedged between some rocks."
He banged up the TJ pretty good, but after some effort, they got him
rubber side down again and he was driving off the trails under his own
power while I was talking to Ron. However he was noting some odd
shakes, vibes and noises.

And Ed, I was really losing Ron when he was describing the damage but he
did catch that his hood was pretty messed up. But then, I'm rather
partial to the crumpled-up-ball-of-paper look.

Yep, pulled the plugs, and as I recall now (this was a late-night call
so forgive my selective and belated recall) they managed to spray a good
amount of oil into the back of the TJ. They have pics and video of at
least part of these festivities so we can certainly look forward to those!

From my expierience with my 04 Rubicon the brakes suck. Ceramic pads to help a
bit they also create less break dust. you can get ceramic pads at advance auto
they will run anywhere from around 40- 75$ Bendix seem to be holding up well.
RE: [OCC] Rubi driveshaft
I ran with my stock drive shaft for all of 2 small trips when I did my Nth
Degree TT. Even with the correct pinion angle it vibrated everything badly.
I soon parked it and ordered a tom woods drive shaft. My 03 rubi only has a
3 inch lift. I have heard of some people having luck with it though. Fred
Ackermann ran his for 6 months before he went to a bigger lift.

Stopping here for the night.
Already had some wrenching this AM and we're not even in Moab yet. Carl had to
tighten up three of his right rear studs. It's a super 44 (I think) and they
are screw on studs...not the press on ones. Slapped some lock tight on and
tighten them down. His master brake cylinder is also bad as well. Didn't have
one local, so gave Ken a call in Moab to track one down there and he found the
last one there. Carl is still driving his jeep, but we'll wait until we get to
the rockies before deciding whether to slap his jeep onto the trailer and have
him drive my jeep. Rob also had trailer brake issues this AM as well. Think he
got that fixed as well. So we got kind of a late start this morning.
We've driven almost 1,300 miles and got a little more than 700 miles left.
Hopefully get to Moab tomorrow afternoon to replace Carl's master brake
cylinder, so we can start wheeling early Monday morning.

Ripped the upper control arm mount off the top of the axle housing in
the front. Welded it up and went back out

I'll agree with Eric..... Look for a good running Jeep, Lifted jeeps
usually =s a good by but you need to becarefully about what the person did
to it.
I'll also through this out there... If it doesn't have to Jeep, you can
consider a Suzuki Samurai.. 1/4 of the price of a jeep and you still have
the top down and great off road abilty... You can find decent ones for
under $1000 and the parts for them are almost free. (Heck there is a guy
on the Creepers Board selling 5 sami's for $2000 and 3 run and 2 are lifted
w/ 35s...)

I tend to agree. It's not mostly even the off-roading stuff to me, but the Jeeps my father and brother have had seem to break down a lot more than other vehicles. Just things like fuel pumps going out on a road trip, etc. But, I seriously don't know enough to condemn them over that type of anecdotal info.
The new four door model does look like a big improvement. It's good because there are so few vehicles out there that are more designed for off-road use than on, but which are still drivable in the city. I wonder what the sticker price will be for the Rubi version?

x2. I wonder what the largest tires you can put on without a lift are? I assume you could put 265s or even 285s? That would make it look even better.
I also notice that it looks like a real rocker bar on there as opposed to the step thingy on the other one.
Yeah, I figure at least a new front bumper to do a winch and get more bumper and the skid does look plastic.
I read somewhere that the regular rubi wrangler had "real" rockers compared to the stock plastic. I can't wait to see one in person, though.
