Advice on Rear Hitch Carrier
I want to pick up one of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1000-...spagenameZWDVW
I know I do not want the flip-up kind, I rather it to be strong.
I will mostly use it for camping to carry the cooking kit, water cans etc
Are they all about the same quality?
Any recommendations?

From my experience, they are all pretty much the same. The more popular the brand...the higher the price.

Re: Advice on Rear Hitch Carrier
My Dad bought be one from Cabela's two years ago and I never opened the box. Just be aware that if you have the rear tire carrier that it may interfere with the amount of stuff you can put on the carrier unless you get a hitch extension.

If they do, they make them for other companies as well...that's the same exact one I have and it goes by another name. I like it compared to the others due to the higher sides, but aluminum would be nice for the lighter weight.

I ran into a similar problem when I put on a hitch mounted bike rack (Thule). I needed to get a 12" hitch extension so I could fold it up. Something to be aware of, a hitch extension decreases the load capacity by at least 1/3. That wasn't a problem when you're talking about bicycles, but it might be if you plan on carrying a lot of weight on the rack you're talking about.

It decreases the load rating of the receiver hitch, not the cargo carrier, so you need to add in the weight of the carrier itself when calculating the capacity of the receiver. Just to clarify.

I got a hitch extender for my Thule bike rack to. I dont recall what length is was. I am thinking about 7" or so.

Re: Advice on Rear Hitch Carrier
Thanks for the replies. I have the inside tire holder, which is why I need more room. I do not want an outside tire because it may be hard to fit in the garage.
Do you guys lock them on when they are loaded?

If the truck is going to be unattended at any point, absolutely.
