A couple of weeks ago I had new 2005 TNR units installed in my 2003 H2 and 2003 Yukon XL. The Yukon is my daily driver and the Nav works perfect. The H2 is my wife’s car and I had not driven it since the original installation.

Yesterday I took ithe H2 for a long drive and noticed that the screen (when in Nav mode), kept freezing up, then it would come back to normal tracking. I liken it to putting a TV screen on “pause” then “play” then “pause” etc. This occurred all throughout the 75 miles round trip. The duration of “pause” times varied. It’s totally random.

I want to note that an aftermarket XM interface and XM radio was installed at the same time. I’m not sure of the brand but I am guessing P.I.E. The XM works okay except that the station name, artist and title come across on the screen weird…so Billy Joel comes across as “lly Jo”. My wife really doesn’t care so it’s not an issue with me. However, could this XM unit be interfering with the Nav?

I’m going to swap the Nav DVD out of my Yukon today to see if it’s a DVD problem as well. Has anyone else had this experience? Help!

Did you connect the VSS connection?

What part number TNR did you use?

Also, what did you do about the GPS antenna? If you have it mounted in the dash, do you have anything sitting on the dash such as a radar detector that could be interfering with it?

Does the antenna have a good view of the sky?

Could the antenna plug have been disconnected when the XM was installed? Are you getting the GPS warning icon displayed frequently on the NAV?

Just swapped out the Nav disc and it's still having a problem. No GPS warning icon either. Do you think it's worth taking apart to see if the GPS antenna is not connected? But if it were, wouldn't I get a GPS warning icon? So if it's not reception issues, or the disc, perhaps it's the head unit. Damn!

However, just looking at the screen and how it freezes (and also get's off track) it would seem that it is a reception issue. But wouldn't I get a constant GPS warning icon if the antenna were unhooked?

You would think so.

Where did you get the NAV unit from? Car Toys?

Klaus,

My bad. It is the damn GPS reception. The red GPS icon is coming on frequently. For some reason I thought the icon was larger and flashed as a warning signal. I realized all this when i took my Yukon out and noticed that there was no "GPS" icon as in the H2. I'm guessing that they:

1. Didn't connect the GPS antenna becasue they were messing with the XM install.

2. Broke something.

3. Got lazy and installed the antenna somewhere it shouldn't go.

Who knows, but at least I know what the source of the problem is now.

Yep… I agree with your diagnosis. This is actually good news! It could be as simple as plugging in the antenna!

Car Toys should be able to fix it up for you.

Keep that wife happy!
