Hey all,
Installed my Cobra 75 last night. I was wondering if anyone can explain to me what king of testing I can do for my connections?
I know people take a meter (I'm guessing a voltmeter) and do some readings... I have a meter but have no clue what to test or what I'm trying to see. If someone could explaing to me so I can test my install I would really appreciate it.

Find a CB shop and have them tune your CB for you. Some of the shops will even up the power for you.
Make sure that you run a ground off of your antenna base and run it back down the rubber grommet and attach it to the A-pillar. Try to make the ground line as short as possible. It needs to be done so that they can tune your antenna properly.

Ok, Here is where I am at so far. I have not grounded the antenna yet. The shop I bought it from told me to come back and they would tune and ground it for me (they said the ground wire may not be necessary). I have no clue.

I ran a ground wire up the a pillar to the mounting bracket. and attached the ground wire from the antenna to the mounting bracket also. Should this work? Once the tune the antenna?

Gromet,
If you off road in wooded areas you should consider some kind of spring mount for the antenna. I recently went to the snow run in Mishigan and watched several magnet mount antennas continually get nocked off due to low branches. Just a thought
Thanks,
David

It's not a magnetic mount. Did you look at the pics. It is on a spring loaded fold down. The mount is bolted to the track in the roof.

Phil,
During the trip to Michigan the H2 in front of me had a medium whip similar to the one that is pictured with a magnet mount base. I had purchased a magnet mount with a metal antenna and a spring mount inadvertently. While the H2 in front of me kept getting his antenna knocked off mine didn't have any problems.
The reason that I mentioned this is that I was looking at the exact same mount as a permanent install, based on your previous posts. This made me think that with a permanent mount I would want some type of a spring mount.
The CB was a requirement for this trip since all of the Hummers were communicating over the CB.
Folding the antenna down would not have been an option due to the reduced reception range and not always having the time to stop and fold it down prior to going under the branches.
However, this may not be necessary or advantageous in other situations.
Thanks,
David

OK, so if the antenna is folded down and resting on my chrome crossbar it kills my reception. If I reach out and bring it an inch off the crossbar I get reception back. So I ordered a wing nut folding mount. I will tighten it so the antenna is angled back but not hitting my crossbar. that should give me reception back, and make it very har to snag... ??? no?

Those guys at the CB Shop will love trying to set the SWR with the antenna 1" from the crossbar!
