yes, the cover locks.
I do not have a cover, but I want one. The bed has more than enough room for 3 people, to toss their things in - at least it did for me.

According to "Hummer" , with the rear window open and and the back folded down you can fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood. I dont own an SUT but I woudl assume that with back down , the window would need to be open, thus not very comfortable in the winter?

Get the cover. I love it. It does limit the use of the midgade as it cuts the space as far as height. The only thing I couldnt fit in it was two dishwashers in their big boxes. Its nice to be able to lock it and It has not leaked though the dealership made a point to say it wasn't waterproof.
One cool thing was I fit three kegs of beer laying down side by side and was able to close the hatch and tailgate with room for 4 20lb bags of ice! Its big back there.
Also, I just ordered a gobi rack for the tonneau cover which will allow me to strap all kinds of stuff to it. You may have seen it on timgco's truck on this site.

So how is it driving with the tailgate down and the tire carrier open? Will the carrier secure in that position? that's always been my concern with the rear swing away carriers....

With the tailgate down the tire will be practically in the next lane. And it doesn't secure in the open position. I took mine off and love it that way. Much more useful.

Are the kids afraid to have friends over because of this? What about the inlaws? And how about your guy buddies? It all sounds very strange to me.

Yeah, I'm just trying to deny the fact I've been out of School for five years! Actually, my little brother (senoir at Georgia Tech) moved in to my downstairs appartment, so I have been re-living the college life every now and then much to my girlfriend's disgust!!!
Oh and as for the dishwashers, it was a border msmuggling mission! Na---actually they were two GE profile dishwashers.
