well i've been debating wether to do my oil change myself, or bring it to sewell hummer in plano. i called them asked what'd it cost for a mobil 1 oil change, he tells me $95. So i ask him what if i bring him the oil and filter, he says, $18 labor, $12.95 chassis lube, and $6.50 for a GM filter. He told me he wouldn't use a mobil one oil filter, any of you guys have any ideas as to why? also, you guys think this is an ok deal or should i just do it my self? and is the chassis lube worth it? thanks.

Hey Saleen,

In my opinion, the oil change is a very simple task. And, the chassis lube is also very simple with the exception of getting to the upper Idler arm lube point.. all others are very accesible.

Never heard of issues with the Mobil_One oil filter.. Usually they are designed to withstand exposure to the oil for longer periods (due to the oil being able to go longer between changes) without breaking down.. I doubt the GM filter is at the same standard.

I say go for it and save your $$$.. besides, it will get you more exposure to the inner workings of your rig and that is always a positive.

ditto on doing your own oil change-it's a great way to learn about your rig. Keep a couple of things in mind:
1)Hit ALL the lube joints, be careful not to blow out the ball joint boots.
2)Be sure to take the skid plate off, clean off where it bolts to the crossmember, and tighten the bolts--that will eliminate some of the popping you get when turning.
3)The dealer is probably worried about a non-GM filter and the potential liability of it coming apart(yes they do, although rarely) and burning up your engine.
4)Look for any fluid leaks while you're under there, check the top side of the skid plate you took off earlier for fluid residue.

I have debated using the syn oil in my H2 a couple of times. What keeps me from doing it is that I get oil/filter changes at Huffines Chevy in Plano for $19.95 and this includes chasis lube. On top of that, every 4th change is 1/2 price. There are coupons on their website for the $19.95 price. They say that they do H2s all the time there.

I do use Syn oil in my Harley because the air cooled engine runs 20-30 degeress cooler with it.

That is a great price for an oil/lube.. my only concern would be the quality of oil they are putting in my H2..

I use Amsoil full synthetic in my H2 and both my Harleys... I figure that oil is cheap compared to the price of scored metal.. I also dont go the full 25k miles that Amsoil states the oil is good for. In my H2 I change the oil when the computer tells me it is time.. in my Harleys I change it ever 2500 to 3000 miles depending on weather (temp etc) that I am riding in.

Everyone has a different opinion on this, but I just like to play it safe.

i just recently used a k&n oil fliter and amsoil 5w30 synthetic, they charged me 18$ at the dealer but i never did the chasis lube guess ishould go back and get it done, i got the oil and oil filter reccomendations from some guys on here, those are supppose to be the best products to use

Being in the UK.............

Chassis lube??? What the stuff???

Oil change would be "oil" and "filter" so what else you doing on the chassis on the H2 then as well as an oil change (which i do every 5000 miles WHEN i get the H2).

Service Manual doesnt say which grease to use for the Lube Points....

Castrol LM grease ok then or do any of you use Moly grease (or high melting point stuff)?

saleen- do it yourself. becareful when you first pull the drain plug ,(size 15mm) because it drains right onto a piece of tubing. Its hard to get a filter wrench on so a $2.00 filter cup works good with a 3/8 drive ratchet. Engine takes 6 quarts. Fill the oil filter before you put it on .

If you're concerned about getting oil on the tubing underneath, just use aluminum foil to channel it to your pan. I just switched to amsoil in the motor, diffs and tranny. The amsoil rep showed me how to do the tranny and where the lube points are. Really reasonable rate for the oil and the labor....

oh, and i have the 6 month oil filter on right now. Will switch to the 1 year filter when he gets them in stock...

the media in the filter breaks down over time once exposed to the oil. So, yes they do have expiration dates..

By using the 6-month filter your filter will remain operational for the full 6 months, and today with the improved oils such as Amsoil that can go a year or 25k miles, the need for the filter to last is more important than ever.
