Camping trip to Norcal
I have a bunch of friends coming to town in a few weeks and we're going to take a trip to Norcal since none of us have ever spent any time there. We'll have open top kayaks, 4wd vehicles (Trooper and my H3), a mountainboard and a ton of other toys. The plan is to head towards Redding and just go anywhere from there. We're looking at Lassen, Shasta, Trinity Alps, the coast, anything. We're open to do some backpacking, hiking, 4x4ing, kayaking, anything really. We'll be camping the whole week but want some REALLY cool isolated camp spots and some good hikes or trails. I know there are a bunch of you from Norcal and I've only lived here for about 1.5 years and haven't really explored much. Any ideas?

Re: Camping trip to Norcal
I haven't explored much in that area, but spent some time in Lassen NP when I was a kid. Really cool area with good hiking, fishing, etc. There's some decent sized lakes where you could take the kayaks out. There's also some good trails nearby - High Lakes, Cleghorn Bar, Peligreen Jeepway. High Lakes would be a cool place to settle in for a couple days and explore.
The north coast is gorgeous but not much wheeling. But if you've never driven that section of Hwy 1 it can be fun. Shasta is more for powerboats and houseboats, but there's probably some really cool hiking trails. Surprisingly, I've never spent any time up there.
Sounds like a fun trip. If you want another H3 to run any trails with let me know.

Re: Camping trip to Norcal
Spent a couple days in Modoc NF about this time last year. Not a lot of hiking, but there are plenty of lakes to kayak (no rivers) and very isolated (didn't see anyone for a couple days at one isolated lake I found).
The coast is nice, have camped there a few times, if you don't have pets, head to Redwood NF or the Prairie Creek State Park (good hiking and biking). There is some tame offroading there if you head up into 6 Rivers NF and the Hoopa Valley Indian Rez.
Lassen is a really cool place to visit, I've been through and camped once, but never spent much time there.
I'd suggest getting a NorCal Delorme Atlas, look at all the NP, SP, and NF then hit their websites. Get a couple places in mind, then head there and explore. You'll never hit all of it in months, but just about everywhere has some cool stuff (I'd recommend redwoods as a 1st time, then head east on subsequent trips).
