Is your Rig Lifted
What size Tires and Rims are you running

Were you accidentally stuck in anything other than High 4

Were you on the Highway or Wheelin

If you can afford it or have more money than time, have somebody else do it, its easier and more satisfying.

Time is money

That sucks and good luck

Found a diff. for $150 online, out of a 05 H2 is that the same gearing everything and I have the other out already. So just putting the new one back in and off we go. Running 20 inch rims 35 toyos. Wasnt doing anything crazy but found out my diff fluid was a little low.

Don't feel too special - cracked front diffs aren't an uncommon occurrence in the '03-'04's. There was a design flaw in the casing that cracked quite often. I had one that was just developing a hairline fracture and H2Rocks had one go Humpty Dumpty.

Don't the later model front diff cases have reinforcement fins all around the diff to add strength?

Nate emailed me about a frt diff I had for sale. I told him 400 bucks because I traded roughly 500 bucks worth of bodywork to the dealership. I was told that a new diff was about 1500 bucks so I thought trading out 500 bucks of bodywork for a used diff was worth it.

Nate found one for 150 bucks which FLOORED me. Boy, do I feel stupid.

Glad you found one at a great price...congrats Nate.

Any idea if there is a technical advisory re: the front diff? For those of you having the problem what year (we are 2004)? Did you get the service 4WD message on the DIC or did it just bomb? Ours made noise the first time
(2006) and we had to have our mechanic point out to problem to the dealership (Lund). We had driven from AZ to CA and back just the month before. Lund fixed it outside of the warranty (cost us 100$). This time (one year later 10/2007) the service 4wd message came on just outside of Page, AZ on our way home from UT (SLC). The front diff was low but no noise. Seems long distance driving at a relatively high speed may cause the problem to progress rapidly. Any input greatly appreciated. I plan to talk to GM next week. Wish us luck!

I have a perfect condition diff assembly and gear set, if someone needs it. I swapped my gears/diff for 4.56s & locker so I will offer the OEM ones up to someone for a good price.

Just a little info, you can blow up, grenade, destroy (however you want to say it) the front diff and the service 4wd light may never come on. The light comes on to inform the driver of electrical problems in the system, not a mechanical failure, but an electrical problem can lead to a mechanical failure. At 150.00 (especially usd, kidding) is a smoking deal. The short side stub shaft is worth more than that. I know of no service bulletins regarding failures, have seen a few fail though. One thing i will recommend is too much maintenance is not a bad thing, if you do it yourself its money well spent.

I was trying to sell mine for 400 bucks but apparently that was too much.

Wink Re: Need a new H2 Front Differential and help changing it.

It is out of my 2006 and was very well taken care of. I swapped the OEM fluid at 10K mikes and put in Redline fluid. Was never abused and I will stand behind the complete diff assembly and gear set if you need the gears with it.

Please note that i's the diff, gears etc. and casing/housing not included. If you need a housing, I would suggest a new 2006 or newer and would not settle for a used housing.

Just PM me an offer worth my time and it's yours. This means to please make an offer decent enough to cover my time to pack and ship etc....

HUMTECH - -thanks for that point re: servic 4WD. Given we were on the rd. we pulled out the trusty manual and as you point out there was no real urgency in re: to the front diff.. just "you can clear the DIC and have it serviced". We added about a quart of gear fluid because paranoia has set in from the first blowout (good thing my Man used to replace front diff.s for a living!!). But I take difference with too much maintenance - it is too much $$$ coming out of my pocket for an expensive, high profile vehicle with less than 65k miles. To that point if there is also some electrical problem well just add on the bucks. But! The check engine light is a bit flakey and the clock resets when the gas is too low. I will be sure to bring that point up as well. But still .. if you all out there see a pattern with front diff. problems don't be a sucka.. call GM on it.
