To all of you who already have the exhaust, do you think it's possible to have a muffler shop change the tips to exit through the rear bumper on either side of the hitch receiver if holes large enough were cut in the bumper? This would prevent the tips from being damaged offroad.

It would be a lot easier to make the tips able to remove. That might look cool though.

The tips are fine where they are. They are angled just rite for off roading.Thats like taking off chrome wheels so you dont get them muddy while off roading.Timgco has been harping on the tips everytime someone mentions SMA.He doesnt have it on his H3 so how would he know.I would not recommend a shop messing with the SMA exhaust.

First humper:
The reason I know is that I have had ours off road and almost caught the bumper on an aproach angle. Anything that hangs down is going to get ripped off! If they are tucked up in there, well, they should be fine. But after seeing the pics, I don't believe they would last long coming off a ledge either. I don't have the exhaust for that reason.

Bring your H3 and exhaust to Moab and see if it lasts. I will LMAO when those tips get crushed. Ok, I wouldn't laugh, but I would be right.

What is going on here?

The tips do look as if they can get crushed while off road to me. I also asked about making the tips removable for wheeling. I like the look of them and would hate to have them crushed. I would rather have a solution before hand. I really don't think it is like comparing taking off the chrome brush guard so it doesn't get scratch because it is there to protect. If it gets scratched, it must have done it's job. On the other hand, if the exhaust tip gets crushed while wheeling, then it won't be doing it's job anymore. I am planning on changing the exhaust because I like the look and would like the deeper sound but I too would like to have the tips removable to protect them. Hey, apparently it just comes down to personal preference and to each their own. Nobody was bashing the SMA exhaust, just looking at solutions for a possible (stress possible) issue.

I know you didn't say anyone was bashing it, just said it because it sounded like you were getting very defensive of the system. Just how it read to me but doesn't matter, we agree it comes down to personal preference.

I may have missed it as I have been out of town more and more lately but this is only the second time I have seen it mentioned. I am sure as soon as somebody in the know has an answer, it will be all over.

Damn, did someone get their feeling hurt or something?? The freakin STOCK exhaust is something of a concren to people that actually push their vehicles off-road (It actually contributed to me decision not to get an H3). And I can tell you definitively, that after spotting well over 2 dozen H3's through various terrains, that anything that hangs even a tiny bit lower wil get crushed or ripped off. It's not bashing, or harping when it is a legitimate issue for people that might ACTUALLY take their truck off-road. As Tim pointed out, the best option is to have a removable tip, the next best option is to tuck the tip at least as good as stock (more tucked would be better). Do you work for SMA or something?!! There are very few perfect products produced and this isn't one of them!

And just to ad a bit more to this post about tips....

That's exactly what I'm talking about Seth. Those tips on the first fin on Fins and things would get crushed.
Don't get me wrong about the TIPS though. i like the the look! But for someone that really wants to off road, that's a big risk with those TIPS.

First Humper, I'm not ripping on your rig. It looks GREAT! But it's obvious that your TIPS have a good chance of getting crushed. If you are not going on more than moderate trails, you'll be just fine.

Oh, BTW-- TIPS TIPS TIPS TIPS TIPS TIPS TIPS TIPS TIPS TIPS TIPS
