I saw today on the local news that the average American is in debt 300,000. Is this really what the world is coming to living pay check to pay check? Right now I only have my mortage. Everything else is payed in full. Just hard to believe 300,000 on average for most.

If you make millions per year...who cares about $300,000 right?
Not saying I make millions, because I totally DO NOT! but I am also not living with a $300K debt load.
I bet it is spot on. I (28) have grown up watching friends use credit cards to the max, and take out loans more than their parents ever did. The generations before I do not believe lived like that...nor did they have MTV showing all these PIMP-RIDES with there 28" wheels either.

What, you don't like diamond grills, 28's, and living with an outhouse? You're weird.

If your house is worth $600,000 $300,000 in debt is not so bad.

What would be more interesting (and realistic) is to know how much debt folks have WITHOUT their home loans. Credit cards, cars, misc stuff like that. School loans? Ugggh.
I've read a couple articles on student loans are crushing some graduates since they did both undergrad and grad school all on loans. Now they get out and guess what? They have to pay those loans BACK! One couple in a business week article had like 140K in student loans, and neither were doctors or harvard MBA's.....Ouch!

Do you always have them on? Do you have a pic you can post? I'd like to see it. I've been planning to buy some.

Don't worry about it.
The Titanic is UNSINKABLE.
You're perfectly safe. There is no chance of a major recession, ever...

On the other hand... some of those McMansions are DAMN NICE.... and if you play the game right... you can make a fortune with them. But you gotta know the real estate game and be willing to playit.
I for one don't know the game... more power to those that do...

Me also--I wish only 300K.
I am working on debt redux and want a suitcase full of cash PLUS all my toys and property.
Maybe next year?

Debt sucks. But sometimes there is nothing you can do about it. I know I didn't have enough money to pay for my house in cash, and even if I did I sure as hell wouldn't have done it. I put half down and mortgaged the other half.
Take away the mortgage as debt and I'm left with about 10 grand tied up in a vehicle.
Now if you wanna tack on business loans then it gets ugly.
