Mike,

Why would you do that? I have a Cobra portable that I had intended on hooking a whip antenna to. In trailing in the mountains the portable has a hard time getting out ergo the need. Is there a reason you won't use a whip or magnet? This is just for my info.

Mike E,
that really wont work at all... they do make make dual functioning antennas, but for high power, you need length. i have extensively looked into this for the past 4 months. I have a gobi rack on my h2, that destroyed my AM radio reception. I have decided to mount a 4 foot fiberglass whip off the front right corner of the rack...looks awesome. the natural next step, is a 4 foot whip on the left front corner for the CB exclusively!! awesome look.

for things I have looked into and why they dont work

1) mounting 8 foot whip off of the rear bumper: for AM/FM would be ok, but for CB, the highest current is loaded at the base of the antenna, so the metal rear of the car will greatly inhibit your range of signal in which you send.

2) using glass mounted 2 foot "cell phone antenna" this is a possibility, but it is very difficult to tune the antenna once installed.

3) portable antenna, poor ability to send signal, poor reception

4) the mangetic whip is a nice option, kind of ugly, but effective without a basket style rack.

let me know what you come up with, my 'research' is ongoing. phil B

My 3' fiberglass whip arrives tomorrow from cobra. I'll take a pic and post. I am attaching it to my portable cb. Should look pretty cool!
