Bomb found in Hummer
By Dana Yates, Daily Journal (a Calornia Publication)

A car bomb was discovered Monday inside a recently-purchased Hummer at a Burlingame car dealership and police and federal agents are investigating whether it was placed by eco-terrorists.

“[Police] don’t know if it was a bomb that was planted by an environmental group opposed to the Humvee and what they do to the environment or if it was personal,” said City Manager Jim Nantel.

The cigar-shaped bomb was found in the engine or undercarriage and could have detonated as soon as its aluminum casing deteriorated. There was no way of saying where or when the bomb would have exploded and who might be in the car when it did, said Nantel.

The bomb was discovered by Putnam Chevrolet-Cadillac mechanics near the fuel tank after the person who recently purchased the car brought it to the service department for repairs. At 3:45 p.m. Monday, both police and fire departments responded, closed down the street and remained on scene for about two hours while the San Mateo County Bomb Squad removed the device.

Police have asked for help from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to help determine how the bomb was made and what it contains, said ATF spokeswoman Marti McKee.

Burlingame police are tight-lipped as they continue to investigate the crime. No comments can be made on whether or not the bomb was planted by an environmental group, said Burlingame police Cmdr. Jack Etten.

The Putnam dealership was to be the site of a protest a few months ago by people upset by the large, military-inspired sport utility vehicle’s poor environmental record. However, the protest was canceled after Hummers at Southern California dealerships were set on fire by eco-terrorists.

A group called ELF — or Environmental Liberation Front — is thought to be the culprit of the Southern California fires but haven’t caused problems in the Bay Area before, said McKee. The group mostly focuses its energy in Southern California and sometimes appears in northern cities like Chico and Sausalito. However, the group is apt to set things on fire rather than plant a bomb, said McKee.

Sorry guys, what a blatant repost this was. There is a lot I miss on the forum and I don't have the patience to catch up on everything.

My little finger is getting off too easy. As punishment for myself, I'm going to do a "find by author" for all 1,600 of DTYFN's posts tonight and read them all.
