I've been lookin at some what appear to be nice used H1's on the net, specifically at www.thehummerexperience.com

Alot of them have high mileage, but I was wondering, what are some of the problems associated with the used H1's?? Both the diesles and the V8 gas motors.

I figured you guys would be the best to ask. Any help would be appreciated.

Wishfully yours..

The prices are way too high. If you want an H1 plan on taking about 3 months to find the one you want for the price that fits.

I have seen H1 as low as $40,000 on the net
What I have been watching is what kind of miles they have on them and what shape are they in.
Over all the looks are about the same, 2003 and a 1997 look alike .
There is a lot of used one out there on the net and you have to find the one that is just right for you.

Jason (The B One),

You thoughts? Are the 2003 and the 97's look reletively the same? Would save a helluva lot of money if I decided to get a one.

Are you dumping the H2 Dennis? Or just getting the H1 as a weekender?

It's pretty simple, really. If you are looking for a daily driver, and H1 is a poor choice. The H2 is clearly superior. Maintenance and upkeep of an H1 is higher, as I understand. If you only drive for 5 minutes or so to and from work, and aspire to hit the trails hard in your free time, the used H1 would be a bad-as-hell ride. I LOVE my H2 but look forward to adding a soft-top H1 to my garage just for cruising and off-road action. It's all about what your needs are.

Argo,

I'm planning on getting an H1 so I can drive over it with my H2.

I'm considering an H1 as a secondary, not primary. Still torn wether I get it in Febuary.
And if I'm gonna be seen as a sell out like Jason .

Frank, you know **** all. Shut yer pie hole.

From what I know of the H1's, if I was in the market (and I'm not cause I'm gonna blow my dough on a 355), I wouldn't get anything older than a 1999. Apparently alot of major improvements were done to the 99's including cup holders for that nice hot cup of joe!

H1 is the coolest looking vehicle, still is.
Tested drove one when it first came out, just too much effort to drive and too hard to live with as a daily automobile. My days of having 3,4,5 autos in a 2 drivers home is over, what a hassel to rotate autos. Too many times perfect automobiles gone bad simply because we didn't drive it enough, this is absolutely true, fine autos need to be driven often and hard, otherwise things start to go wrong for no reason at all, once that starts there is no turning back.

As parents for 2 teenagers, it is too common we have their friends with us. To the movie, to In-and-Out Burger, to Paintball field, to ski or whatever. H1 has 4 seats, period. That does not work for us.

But H1 is still the most beautiful automobile.

(Tried to post H1 photo, but that function is not working tonight.)

It's funny Dennis. You'll start looking for H1's, first you'll start with maybe a '99 then you'll think hell I'll just get an "00 but then you want the newer wheels so you look at an '01 but those had problems with TT4 (so I hear) so you better get an '02 but that's stupid because you can get an '03 with a rear locker, but why do that when you can get the new interior, but who wants the first model year of a new interior?

See, big mess. It's really difficult but I can tell you that when the H2's came out they threw some money at the H1 to improve it. Mine is very quiet, powerful on the highway and has a stereo system that kicks ass. I love this thing but now I want an '04

Being a poor choice for some is not always a poor choice for another. I test drove the H2 a week before I bought my H1. If I could afford to have 2 Hummers than the second 1 would be a H1 Wagon. Comfortable as hell.

CK,

I have to agree with you. My wagon is so incredibly comfortable. I would even venture to say it's more comfortable than my H2 was PRIMARILY due to the tremendous flat space you get with an H1. I have my CB, GPS, and 12" laptop on the dash with plenty of room to spare. The rear of a wagon is enormous. You CAN seat 5 with the jump seat, 6 if you want 2 jump seats (not sure who would do this). You still get heated seats, the kids love the back seats because they have so much room between them. My 2 yr. old son cries when he has to ride in my wife's tahoe because he wants to ride in my truck (I get a kick out of that)

If you have ever taken a long drive in an H1, and also in an H2, then I don't know how you could ever conclude that a cross-country trip in an H1 would be as comfortable as in an H2. But hey, more power to ya! For all I know you are mini-me. My next vehicle will be a H1 soft top, primarily to have a convertible. I would never bash an H1, because I think they have their place and are the ultimate beast. But with that said, taking an H1 on a seriously long road trip, compared to an H2, is like flying to London Heathrow in the economy seating compared to first class; no matter how much you love an H1 (and I do), the cockpit is simply claustrophobic compared to that of an H2. Keep your opinions, I'll keep mine. It's all good. The front seat cock pit cubic inches of space comparison makes it a mathematical no-brainer, regardless of opinion, unless you prefer less room; in which case you are correct, the H1 is better.

More importantly, there is a site on line (do a search and see if you can find it- I don't remember which it is) that lists the new changes, additions, and improvement of the H1 on a year to year basis. This in addition to the obvious fact of looking into just how badly the used H1 you are looking at has had the **** kicked out of it off-road are significant things to look into. High mileage is a factor, but even a '00 with only 10,k miles, yet having those miles put on by an idiot bashing the H1 off-road isn't good either.

I don't know from personal experience but I have heard that H1 maintenance and repair costs can be significantly higher. Since they only produce 700-800 H1's a year, parts are damn expensive. Some say the H1 is particulaly suited to those who like to work on 'em themselves. They are definitely more of a hobby vehicle than the H2. Here's a side-by-side pic just for grins.

R2,

No, that's not right. Alignment on an H1 is difficult but if you take it to the right place where they know what they're doing it's around $300 for four wheel. I had mine aligned under warranty for a hefty $0. Besides, most higher end shops now have the laser alignment machines. You pull in, they place the filters on the wheels and tweak the tie rods until it's in line. It took about 20 minutes to do the front end. Of course, if they don't know what they're doing you're in big trouble. This goes for changing out the CTIS with runflats too.

I go to Cerritos, Mike Sabreeze (sp.)works on mine. He is part of the Hummer race team and works exclusively on H1's. He really knows his stuff. Also, all of the service on new H1's is free 3yr./36.
