Default Time for New Brake pads

Should I go with OEM replacements?

Is there anythiing better out there?

What should I expect to pay for OEM Pads?

What should I expect to pay for an upgraded pad?

Usually the front brakes wear out sooner than the rear brakes.
There is no need to replace the rear pads if they are still good.

I don't like turning the rotors unless they are scored.

52K. Must be that extra weight (of the add-ons to the H3 I mean, I wanted to make that perfectly clear).

I have to agree 100 %.
Hard to understand how the rears would be worn out the same time the fronts are worn out. The fronts do 70-80 percent of all the braking, and should at least twice as fast.
Fronts at 52K sounds about right. BUT...$530? Can't say if that is a good price of not, since I would do my own brake job. Hardest part is jacking up the front or rear and removing the damn heavy tires.

I also agree on the rotors. If they are not scored, or warped, do not turn, unless it is a finish turn just to remove any possible pad residue that might be on the rotor(s). Too many people have this philosophy of turning rotors in their heads, and usually, it is not required. GM has published hundreds of bulletins on NOT turning rotors if not required. Removing the metal mass will cause overheating to damage the rotors faster than if left at standard mass.

OEM pads are excellent, however, there could be others out there just as good. Raybestos, Warner, Bendix are three good name brands, but not sure if they make any for the H3. Also not sure at this time, what other vehicles might use the same pads. (I'll try and check tomorrow for ya.)

I would guess you can get the pads a lot cheaper from GM Parts Direct.

Yes and no. Hard to really estimate the time left on a set of brake pads. Personally, I know you have good relations with your Dealer, but a second opinion does not hurt.

On my 2002 Avalanche with 11 inch rotors on back rear pads were worn out at 45000 km, about 30,000 miles and front were still over half there. Couldn't figure it unless there is some weird biasing with the ABS system. Was first time in my life I ever replaced rear and not front. Usually rear last at least twice as long as front. For future reference:
15240794 Pad Kit, Frt Disc Brk ? Retail 149.25; trade 111.94;
15240812 Pad Kit, RR Disc Brk ? Retail 137.72; trade 103.29

Pads do not show as being used on any other GM vehicle. So, for the limited number out there, non-OEM pads may not be produced...yet.
