Brake Pedal 'creaks' occasionally?

Hey folks,

I tried to search for this and could only find one thread which lead to a non-existing thread.

The other day my brake pedal started making a 'creaking' sound when pressure was applied (BTW, the sound was definitely coming from the pedal area, not outside.) It sounded a lot like an old wooden floor and only made the sound when I applied pressure to it. The sounds started soon after some heavy city traffic, nothing really felt wrong with the braking system at all besides the creaking, and there were no warnings on the dash. The sound went away after some smooth highway driving and I have only noticed it slightly yesterday but it went away immediately.

Any ideas?

Mine is doing the same havent had time to mess with it.. We (at our service dept.) have had some problems with brake pedal bushings in the past not sure if this might be the same thing or not. I need to take a look and see my wife complains about it all the time...

I think it could be the brake switch....mine did that, and then they replaced it when it finally died.

Problem was, my service 4 wheel drive light came on when it did finally go.I didn't know it at the time, but I had no brake lights

Heya Bebe, how long did you have the sound before the brake switch kicked the bucket?

Besides the brake lights not working, any other dangers if the brake switch dies, or does it just control the lights?

I'm not sure what else it controls but for me it was just the rear lights.

It was about a week. When it goes you'll get the service 4 wheel drive on the DIC.

If that is what it is.

Brake switch is connected directly to the rear center mounted stop lamp assembly, but for rear brake light operation, the BCM controls this according to input from the switch.
The switch also supplies an output to the electronic brake control module, so the module can determine if traction control or antilock brake logic is used if wheel speed sensors signal a requirement for the EBCM to interact with the vehicle.
Also, an output is supplied to the PCM for TCC lockup.

The EBCM also monitors the brake switch input to compare against master cylinder pressure. If pressure goes up, brakes should be applied, if not, stabilitrack/traction failed will be displayed and the EBCM will not operate correctly.

Also, technicians are incorrectly replacing the brake (or stop lamp) switch versus adjusting the switch; so I believe now the stop lamp switch requires approval to be replaced. (This is common when technicians do not diagnose the problem correctly.)

As for the noise, if it is a creaking noise, I would say it sounds to me like a bushing. I guess it could be the plunger on the switch, but usually creaking is caused by something like a bushing.
