Re: Classified VIN #
I have black electrical tape across my VIN. Can be removed in seconds if a officer wants to see it, but can't be written down by someone, and then a key made via the VIN and key code.

In NY the vin # is listed on the windshield registration sticker.
Cool mod though

Re: Classified VIN #
thats not a good idea. Depending on where you live its probly illegal to cover up your vin #. Your vin # is also there to prevent car theft cause they'll change the license plates. And all that stuff about people getting new keys made is not all its cracked out to be. Some of its fake. You have to forge and make a lot of fake documents to prove ownership. Its a lot easyier to steal the car in other ways. Hot wire, tow, whatever. We caught a guy stealing cars buy towing here in ny not to long ago. And some amazing guy who could actually sit in a car and make a key from a blank right there from marks left when trying to turn it. Without a vin number in ny your car will get impounded because it could be stolen.

Not a good idea for you, but a good idea for me and for anyone who wants to check state laws. It is not illegal in TN, MI, IN or OH; not sure about NY, but I'm not saying to remove the VIN, just placing something over it. A business card would do, just cover the last six is all that is required. The other numbers can be obtained almost anywhere.
Most police agencies, I have ever encounted in my life, will understand, since it is not a permanent destruction of the VIN number. As for getting keys made. A few years ago, one of the stations did a story on that, and the good looking woman got keys made over fifty percent of the time; the dude only 20 percent. In addition, a crook working in a parts department of a local chevy dealer was found guilty of helping a theft ring obtain keys based on VIN numbers.
Hot wiring won't work with the newer cars with the BCM security systems. Towing works really good.
Yes, you are supposed to show ID to get the key code and a key cut; however, not all places check, and in some places, the guy or gal behind the counter is the crook.

Re: Classified VIN #
Last Friday I drove to our dealer and had 3 keys made with no request for ID or anything, the service guy walked to my H3 wrote down the VIN and made me the keys no questions asked. I will be blocking my number today after reading this post today.

That is not unusual, and is a lot different than walking in cold, without a vehicle. However, I still say, it does not hurt to cover the last six digits (actual serial number) of the VIN with at least a business card (accidently thrown on the dash ).
Too many crooked people in this world, and it gets harder and harder to steal a vehicle due to passkey type systems that are BCM controlled. That is one reason why they say car/truck jackings are up. So, my opinion is, why take a chance.

Keys made at the dealer?? What did that cost? $150? My stealer wanted $50 ea. I went to a locksmith and got two for $1.50 each!! I guess since I was driving it and had a key he figured it must be mine.

Re: Classified VIN #
I had to check on other things as well so I just had them made there, I got the ones with the GM logo so they were only 17.00ea .
Today they are replacing the fuel tank pressure sensor (something like that), it was out the day I bought it new and the part just came in.

Interesting but least of my concerns. But if I was a secret agent 007 maybe...
