Default Inside couresty light coming on while driving

Has anyone had this problem, and how did you solve it?

2006 H2.

Once in a while the passenger front door will turn ON the courtesy light while driving. Just on this one door. All other interior lights stay off. Noticed it at night, but might do it during the day also, when it would not be noticeable.

This is really freaky, especially since all other lights are off. Pop, it just comes on and goes off by itself. Is there a short somewhere that completes the circuit?

WTF? How could THIS possibly happen, and where do I start looking for a solution? Do I need an exorcist?

Anyone have the answer?

The light in the door itself? or in the overhead console (map light)?

You might have a switch or door that needs alignment/adjustment. If it's a short, it's traceable.

Humtech,

It is the light which is mounted inside the front passenger door. This is the ONLY light that comes on by itself while driving. Not the overhead console lights nor any other light.

Only noticed it at night. Did it while driving at night a few times. Did it while it was night for a while, NOT during a transition when the headlights come on. Nor did it seem to coincide with any other event while driving.

Door was NOT showing ajar on the dash, which it should if that circuit was completed to turn on the light if the door was ajar. Right?

As Tower suggests, a bad door switch? But, would a bad door switch that activates to turn on the passenger door light also not turn on all the entry lights inside the vehicle, since I presume it is all one circuit?

If this info helps, the vehicle a while back had a dead battery in the morning, running about 9V when I threw it on the tester. I thought that the H2 had 'battery rundown protection" which shut off a draw if the battery hit 11v at rest. It only did this once, a few months ago. No reason for it that I could find, so I did not worry about it further. Battery drop-load tested OK, and is fine to this day. Could this be related? Does this info help?

Any other ideas?

Just looked at the wiring schematic and that light is controlled by the passenger door module (lock and window switch is the module) and supplies a ground to turn on the light, power is constant. Either the module is intermittantly supplying the ground signal or the ground side of the circuit has an intermittant short to ground. ground side wire is the light blue, power side is white. If i come up with anything else i will let you know but my guess is the ground wire may be pinched somewhere in the door.

Humtech,

You are definitely the pro!

Great idea! This sounds very possible, and I will check it out. Your notes jogged my memory. Last summer, the inside door skin from that door was removed, in order to push some door dings out of the door from the inside by a dent repair guy. The module had to be unplugged also and removed with the door skin.

So, that may very well be the answer. I will dismantle the door once it stops snowing and trace the wires. Thanks for the tip on which color of wire to look for. Will post once I have taken a look!

Thanks for the help!

Humtech,

P.S. Where in Canada are you? My H2 is in BC. As a pro, do you work for a GM dealer? I want YOU to be my mechanic. By viewing your other posts, you really know your stuff....

Finall,

If it's any comfort, my 2006 does the same thing once in a while. It is wierd. Just thought it was me...

I tend to use this as training in a way, hearing different problems in the customers words and trying to diagnose from that helps in everyday problems at work. I have come across some things on here and was then able to apply the repair process at work. So really this works both ways.
