Trailer Hitch Bike Racks???

I am the proud new owner of an 2005 Adventure - and I want to be able to put a bike rack on the back that will still allow me to open the spare and tailgate. After much searching and driving around the Phx metro area on this 110 degree day - I'm hoping that someone out there has already solved this problem for me. The closest I have come is a Thulle Trailblazer (swings out - just 2" short of allowing the tailgate to clear the tire). Thanks in advance for any help!

I will have to check and see which one I have but it folds down so you can open the back. Will post the make after I check on it.

I put mine on the front when I had my H2...

I went and checked and I have a Bell rack. Got it at Sport Authority if you have them where you are. A friend of mine has talked about borrowing it and putting it on the front of his H2 like Harley said. I would think it would work nicely up front. Did you have visibility issues Harley?

Not really any big vis probs... you just have to drill a verticle hole for the stay pin in the front reciever of the bike rack itself.

Thanks for all of your help...we do have a Sports Authority- just down the street. But - putting it in the front receiver is very intriguing. Solves the problem perfectly. Once again...thanks!!

Google Versahaul. I think thats what they are called.
I wouldn't put a RoadKing on one. But there are people that do it.

I have a Thule, fits 5 bikes and tilts down BUT it doesnt tilt down far enough to allow operation of the tire carrier. Also, since the tired carrier protrude so far, I had to get a hitch extension to clear the tire. I think its either a 7 or 9 inch one. You are talking about a rack for bicycles right?

Did some research and the max you can put on most of these is 600 lbs. ROad King is about 700+ lbs.

I researched this last summer and ended up with a Thule. I needed a 12" extension from the receiver hitch but it works great. There is NOT enough room to swing the tire away however and open the back. Whatever you end up with, if you use an extension in your receiver hitch, it decreases the load capacity by about 1/3. If you're only carrying bicycles that is not an issue. If you are towing a trailer it might be.

Got an Allen bike rack of Ebay last summer.Grinded off the receiver had a longer 2" square tube 1/4" thick welded on. The rack folds back just enough to clear both tire rack and tailgate. It is very sturdy the clearance is only a couple of inches when everything is closed.
