Chromed rims in Winter

What do you guys with the factory chromed rims do in the winter? Do you remove them and use other rims? Especially those of you in the Northern States. We get alot of snow where I'm from and they salt the **** out of the streets. I would hate for the mags to get ruined in their first winter.

I have 2 sets...Winter set = Studded & sipped Mounted on stock wheels.

Investing in a set of winter tires, (stud them if legal--Sipping is a MUST!) and mounting them on Cheapo rims!, Is the only way to go!...IMHO... Mine still look NEW after 4 seasons!...Well Almost! (3/4 tread anyway) But they will last an EASY 5-6 more winters! ...Lil Ugly Get to wear Um this season tho!. ..Sharing! Shoes

Yeah, I'd highly recommend taking your nice rims off and putting crapo ones on for the winter. Unless you wash your car frequently in the winter, and get all that stuff that sits in the rims out of there, it will eat through. Watch your other chrome areas too. They might show some corrosion if you have any imperfection in the chrome coating.

Stock chrome rims will be fine in the winter. They have protection from the factory, not sure if it's just clear coat or something more. Cheap aftermarket chrome is what you need to be careful with. But if you want new wheels/tires and need an excuse, you might as well get them!

The alloys will corrode too. And the factory chrome won't hold up to Upstate NY winters.

And Liquid Mag Cloride, is the same on both sides! ....Clean the $hit off asap!....(I personally use the--GAF--Cleaning Proceedure! .The real problem ---Around here anyway!---are the Cinders!....Add Abraisives (ANY) to that Mag-Cloride........And IT Just!....Sigh!......TURNS PURDY......................Into...........Bad!

Only seen one wheel from GM pit and it was on the spare tire carrier.The chrome was pitting from the back side of the rim forward to the face.

Pretty good track record for GM chrome.

I ran the H3's alloys on my ex's H3 in Lake Placid, NY last winter, and they experienced some discoloration and corrosion.

My H2 rims pitted where the salt sat too long. These were stock rims on both. My suggestion: Get some cheap steel rims, hit them with some black Hard Hat or whatever, and run those with snow tires for the winter.

I guess I want to add that in Central Pa, there's not a whole lot of snow to contend with usually, hence not too much salt. If you live in a snowbelt, like I did in NY or up around Erie, then you're going to get a lot more salt and probably experience more corrosion.

I'm thinking about using my 16.5" rims from the Homecoming, and mounting those with some decent snow tires just for the winter.

Just curious. I lost a set of aftermarket rims due to the chrome peeling in less than 3 months on my last vehicle.
Discount Tire replaced them with powder coated aluminum rather than chrome.(My choice)
Will GM warranty chrome on the wheels?

I live in South Central PA, but I grew up near Erie. The winters here are not as bad as what we had in NW PA (snow belt and lake effect) but we still get some lake effect here. I had Eagle Alloy brand alloys on my Explorer. They didn't really corrode but stained. However, the aftermarket, locking lug set from Advance Auto did corrode terribly - and they wouldn't replace them. In fact, an employee told me that th majority of their metal parts are terrible that way (bolts, etc).

I wonder if should just run the wheels I have now and pick up a stock set for the winter or the opposite come spring? Hmmmm..... I have seen black wheels for sale through Eagle Alloy and American Eagle, etc. I wonder if these would corrode as well...

Factory Rims will last winters if you put a good chrome wax on.
The aftermarket ones forget it they need to come off.

Yea, the winters are terrible here in SoCal as well. You guys all better stay away.
