…your are dumb enough to leave the sunroof open, and it rains.
Didn’t want to mention this in my previous post, until I went out and accessed the damage; however, upon returning last night, I left the sunroof open and the H3 in the driveway, and this morning we had a thunderstorm roll through. It woke me up, and when getting my coffee, I looked out the window to check to see if I had closed the roof from the night before. Yes, my puppy heard the “F” word (not the first time), and I scrambled to get my jeans on and run out the door to close the roof.
Best guess estimate is about two minutes of rain fell before I realized what I had done, and ran outside and closed the roof. Lucky for me, the thunder came before the rain, and lucky for me it was a thunderstorm and not a nice quiet rain.
Now, the rain has stopped and I went out to survey the damage with a pile of towels.
Seats were wet, but being leather, easy to dry off. Console was wet, and cup holder had a very slight amount of water. Driver’s door was wet, but passenger’s door was dry. I/P did not have any water; neither did the backseat.
Floor mats were wet, but were not soaked, and probably about as wet as if it was a rainy day and I was getting in and out a few times.
As soon as the sun comes out, I will re-open the roof, all the windows and let what I can’t reach dry out. However, it appears the door switches, are waterproof as they are designed to be. Only switches I am worried about are the seat belt latch switches, and I’m going to give them a shot of WD-40 to displace the water. WD-40 is great for displacing water and it will eventually evaporate.

I took my element to the dealership for an oil change and told them that the sunroof was open (this dealership always washes your car when you bring it in for service). Do you think the dumbasses bothered to put the sunroof back in (mine is completely removable) before washing it? Nope....completely soaked interior. Luckily for me it has no carpet and dried quite nicely.

I've had a similar problem with my wife's Subaru Forester.

She came home on a Friday night after work. The weather was great and she had had the roof open and forgot to close it when she came into the house. Well, it started raining later that night and dumped buckets all weekend long.

Monday I need to take her car for the day for some reason. I go out to the car and see the roof open and dread looking inside. I opened up the door and see over an inch of water standing on the floor and the cup holders are filled to the rim. Suffice it to say I was NOT happy.

I ended up soaking up the water with towels and driving to work sitting on a trash bag. When I got to work I left all the windows open along with the roof and mother nature did the rest. Completely dry for the ride home.

The car has never acted funny, runs like a top, never presented a problem (knocking madly on wood here ) since then and it has been well over a year since its "bath".

I don't have my H3 yet so I can't really comment much on that, but my guess is that your H3 will be just fine. Its a HUMMER after all, its got to be tougher than a wee Subaru.

If I recall you are also in Michigan. Is this what we have to do to make it rain here? We've been bone dry for almost 3 weeks now. Do you think that if I left my H3 with the sunroof open but covertly covered it with cellophane that that would be good enough to induce showers? Or perhaps a "lesser" vehicle might do the trick.

My friend has had this happen to his vehicles at least a dozen times (that he told me) and his vehicles haven't suffered any ill effects (that I noticed). I think the key is to not then store the soaked vehicle in a dark damp place that promotes m*** growth. Worry not.

It might work. Surprised me too, since before I left there had not been any noticeable rain since late June. This mornings thunderstorm was quick.

When I get home after a night of Mexican food and beer, I always leave the sunroof open (and the other windows). Luckily, I have it parked in my garage.
