We will be towing the H3 behind the motorhome and spend the next 12 days in Ouray. If I can get access I will post some updates when possible, if not I will let everyone know how it went when we get back.

If anyone is going to be in the area look us up in Ouray at the campground behind the city park.

Havent done it in an H3 but have been to

"Ouray CO. The JEEP capitol of the World"

in a CJ7.

Lots of fun,,Not real technical,,but some of the pases will make you pucker.

Lake City to Ouray is fun,,Engineer Pass,,and lots of ghost towns.

Ophir Pass between Telluride and Ouray is a good one also

Black Bear just east of Telluride is one of the toughest

What breaking system are you using on the H3 for towing behind your Rv. I trust you are using one ????. If not, be prepared for some VERY hot coach brakes. Ouray is a great place for wheeling. Buy a local map,find Silver Lake, and head up there. It is stunning. I was up there in my Defender 90 2 years ago.

There are 2 different base plate configurations for towing the h3 behind a coach. Which one did you have installed, The Roadmaster or the Blue Ox.

The D90 is a truly awesome 4 wheel drive truck, but the H3 has more comforts in adverse weather conditions. Many people ask which is better, it is a tough choice. Each truck has its own advantages. I do truly believe though, that the new 2007 Unlimited 4 door Rubicon has combined the best of each truck, and produced a true winner. I am going to buy one, and tow it to Ouray next year, and try and do Black Bear pass. I tried last year at the end June, but could not get close, cos it was still blocked by snow.
I was talking to one of the firemen in Ouray, who is part of the mountain rescue team up there, and does he have some great stories.
Great people, Great town, and even Greater trails...

would like to know what kind of towing equip. you are using ? H3 in neutual , that is it..

Aw Heck. Just got back from Ouray yesterday. Saw three H3's in the vicinity: 2 yellows and another one (forgot which color). One yellow was street-type. The other was more off-roading. Which one were you? Ouray was awesome. Did Engineer, Cinnamon, and Poughkeepsie. Had torrential rain on Poughkeepsie to make it interesting . Got to make this a yearly trip for sure! We love the Ouray / Silverton area, most of it is not difficult but the beauty is over the top. We go every year, this is the second year with the H3. Just a partial list of the trails we ran:
Black Bear
Ophir
Last Dollar
Engineer
Cork Screw
California and Hurricane Pass
Stone Pass
Yankee Boy Basin
Silver Basin
Governor Basin
The list goes on and on since we were four wheeling for 10 straight days and we all loved it. The H3 performed well, the only exception being one of the trips up Poughkeepsie. I had gone up the left side which they call the bypass but due to the rain was actually tougher than the rocky section on the right. Anyway after watching four or five Jeeps get winched up I thought I would try it but didn't want to make ¾ of the way just to have to back down so I was just crawling and wouldn’t you know it the H3 just crawled right up the muddy section and over the rocks at the top. None of the Jeep guys could believe it and they wanted pictures so I went back down for the camera and on the way back up the check engine light came on and the H3 went into "Reduced Engine Power". Obviously at that point I backed down waited to see if the code would clear which it didn't so I disconnected the battery. Once the battery was reconnect all was well and we never had another problem.

The picture's below are of a Honda Odyssey I helped get down Engineer in a torrential rain storm. We spent over 2 hours making rock bridges, pushing and pulling to get them to Hwy 550. I bet they had $5K in damage to the Honda, the side door would not even open and you should have seen all of the stuff hanging from the undercarriage. Jeepers had been passing them and told me they were down there so I went to help out. All of the Jeepers except one passed them by. The only one that stopped to help was 3 women in a rented Grand Cherokee. Why they people who passed them by did not stop I have not idea. They were very nice people from Holland who had been told to take the Alpine Loop.

That sucks that somebody told them to take the Alpine loop in a minivan ... and then none of the jeepers stopped to help them. So much for good ol' fashion american hospitality

Braking system???? What braking system???? Actually I was going to tow it on a trailer with brakes and changed to towing it on the ground just before we left because I wanted to save the 2000lbs my roll back weights (tow 5000lbs instead of 7000lbs). I would have had brakes and would not recommend anyone tow anything which does not meet the specifications of the tow vehicle. Mine specified that I needed trailer brakes for any towed item over 1000lbs. I knew I was pushing it and went slow and pulled over if someone wanted to pass. The brakes were fine and never got hot.

I used the Demco adaptors and tow bar which works fine.

We did not go to Silver Lake it?s just off Black Bear and we were alone (not a good idea on Black Bear if you make a mistake) so we didn?t want to take any side trips. Maybe next time we are in the area, thanks for the tip.

I figure I post a few more pic's we had a great time and am looking forward to going again. I just hope I can meet up with some other Hummers. We did have a chance to spend a couple of hours with one of the H1's doing tours but the rest of the time it was just me us.
