Default spare tire carrier problem

I have a swing out tire carrier that likes to come un latched. it has a safety cable but makes noise when it does and is annoying.

The original owner said it was installed by the dealer. I'm not sure what brand.

can the latch on these be rebuilt or something?

Thanks

My first suspicion would be that the mounts have shifted position and now the latch does not properly align so that it can completely close shut. Does the larger side line up with the middle of the latch or has it dropped down some so that it no longer vertically aligns in the middle of the latch?

If that is not your problem then you are likely going to do some further diagnostic work to see exactly what the problem is.

Has anyone else had a problem with this?

I have played with the alignment and it still come unhooked. I took the spare off and it stays hooked.

My spare does weigh more than stock but damn the set up seems pretty stout.

Well I took the latch apart and just jiggling a screw driver the latch will release.

I called a dealer today and they want $800 for just the latch and GM parts direct want $487.

I called the company who made the latch and they will not sell direct

Has anyone come up with a solution for this? I may have to take it to a metal fab shop and have the latch cut off

Those prices are crazy.... check ebay and places like LKQ, may be able to save a ton on a gently used setup

I bought another entire unit used and it works great. Only difference I can see is that this one has the rubber insert piece where my old one was is missing some if it. This rubber piece might keep the arm from vibrating but this other one feels more solid when it latches too.

I called the company who made the latch for GM and they say only GM has the spare parts and they never heard of one failing

I just took a 3500 mile trip and it never came unlatched once.
