Hummer Nut,
So you are one of the first guys to report your "Change Oil" indicator mileage. Good to know. The long interval must be because of the type of driving you are doing. Are you doing a lot of freeway mileage or relatively long daily commutes?
I had the dealer reset my oil monitor at 8500 miles when they changed my oil and installed the hitcham. I'll see when the indicator comes on.

As the proud owner of an oil and gas industry mutual fund that was up 44% last year, I thank you for each and every change.
I also have quite a bit in a healthcare mutual fund, do you take a lot of unecessary over the counter drugs as well?

As a long time Mechanic mine will see an oil change at 1,000 miles due to the break in contaminates that occure . Then every 3 to 4 thousand miles . I dont care what that damn computer thinks . Call me old fashioned but i know motors .

I did my first change at 2K, but would have performed it earlier if I had not been on the road. However, I also know engines, and know the GM oil life system. I have personally checked it out on my previous GM vehicles, and through an oil analysis by an independent lab, the oil life system is quite accurate. If anything, it sways to the side of safety, and the oil analysis shows the oil's TBN is higher than should be at the percentage of oil life remaining.
It must be understood that the system's algorithms are based upon a specific grade of oil as specified by GM, and not using oil that meets this specification will cause the oil life indicator system to be inaccurate. (A better grade that meets the oil specification such as Mobil 1 is ok.) In addition, it cannot take into account extra dirt into the system, it has to assume you are using the specified type of air filter, and the intake system is sealed as from the factory. So, if you open up the air intake system, switch to a filter that is not as efficient for particle filtering, then the oil life system may not be as accurate.

Oil is a lot better than it used to be, but I still would hesitate to go more than 5-6k miles between changes, no matter what the indicator says.

I'll let you know in a few months. I'm at 59% oil life remaining, with a little over 4K on the oil. I would guess I'll hit about 20% remaining with about 5-6K on the oil. I plan on sending a sample to Blackstone's lab in Indiana for an analysis.
