I've been thinking about having my H2 Rims "dipped" or whatever they do for the Black Chrome. One of my Biz partners is getting the rims on his Infiniti G35 back today or tomorrow after having this done. I'll post some pics in the next couple of days. I think it cost him about $190 per wheel, we'll see if it's worth it.

quote:
So Bright-Lee, am I right in assuming all chromed coatings over aluminum will fail (because of trapped gasses) at some point in the future?

Trapped gases can be a reason for problems with chrome. Cast aluminum is more likely to have problems due to the level of porosity. The black handles in the pics are made from billet aluminum and probably won’t have gassing issues. A more common problem is from alum. expanding and contracting with temperature changes. The chrome does not expand at the same rate resulting in stress cracks.

Since nothing is forever anyway, chromed aluminum is not always a bad way to go. For example if you are leasing and like shiny wheels that require no maintenance, it’s great!

Sorry, totally forgot to post the pic.

Hopefully these come out.

I like it but can't reallt decide if it's right for my H2 as I am in the process of blacking it out. I'm trying to get rid of everything chrome but I have a feeling a good dark black chrome would look really good.

They make it in solid chrome, so I am sure its just a matter of time until black chrome, but is expensive.....$2000.

Black chrome/pearl is catching on around here. I see quite a few sporty type cars with them. They're also becoming popular with the ricer crowd.

I like 'em!

Check these guys out. They do a "black pearl" chrome (it really looks more like a darker regular chrome than black).

They have pics on the website

Check the thread "Chrome on aluminum-the pro's and con's" It explains how black chrome is very similiar to regular chrome and why it may be more expensive.
The handles in the picture above are what anodized aluminum would like if polished first and anodizing is more affordable and in my opinion, more suited for aluminum.

Is it merely a lighting issue? The rims in the sun a reflective and the hood handles above look matte black. I think I prefer the reflective quality in the rims because they look different. If the hood handles and vent are very matte it may look to much like the plastic. This probably needs to be seen in person.

They should make the entire hood psuedo vent out of black chrome. It would be so nice to replace that part with something other than plastic.

I asked the same question! The strange thing about black chrome is that it is so shiny it frequently does not look black. In person it is black but from may angles it is so shiny it looks like...well, black chrome.

Those black chrome hood handels look awesome.

So Bright-Lee, am I right in assuming all chromed coatings over aluminum will fail (because of trapped gasses) at some point in the future?
