Tire Question

What is a good tire to run in the snow and off road. I am looking to add a second set to go into the giggle weeds. I have the wheels, now I just need the tires!

Honestly,

The tires that came on your truck, the Goodrich All-Terrain T/A ko, is excellent in snow, on ice and on wet idy roads.

I just noticed DRTY's post above, and I agree, except to point out that the H2 "stock" tire is already siped and does not need aftermarket siping as the others do.

Notice the difference with the extra siping in this picture. It makes a huge difference in grip, performance and tire wear.
This is a picture of my A/Ts that have about 50-60% left of the tread. Notice there's no chunking or irregular wear. And I beat the piss out of these tires.

Gotcha, DRTY. You may recall, I probably spend as much time on snow, Ice and Verglass (black Ice) as anyone. The stock tires have served me extremely well (must be all that time in snow country building my skill ). But I do appreciate the education and the pix distinguishing the aftermarket from the factory siping. Thank you for sharing your expertise. I still have plenty to learn, Deity Dirty.

The "siping" on stock tires is not what we're talking about.

One would think that someone with your limited off-roading experience & ability would be looking for any edge you could get.(Did I say that out loud? Oopsie.)
Siping greatly enhances a tire's grip in all conditions.

In no particular order, here's my opinion on the tires I've had experience with on the H2. All of them have been run on stock wheels(powder-coated black, of course).

Iroks- Awesomely durable and amazing off-road tire. Gives you a sense of invulnerability when off-roading. Great in the mud. Very good on sand. Pretty good in the snow. Ok on wet pavement. Decent noise level on pavement when new, but becomes increasingly noisy as the tread wears down. A horrible tire to balance, requiring excessive amounts of weight. I keep them stacked in the garage when I'm not wheeling.

GoodYear MTRs- Awesome rock crawler. Extremely flexible and very durable. They pack up with mud and aren't very good at self-cleaning(throwing mud). Very good on snow, decent on ice(when siped). Very good on sand(when aired down). On dry pavement they are very good, with low noise. Decent tire to balance. But in the two sets I've had, one tire always wore faster than the others regardless of how often they were rotated. Currently running these tires.

BFG A/Ts- Stock tires. Really a great all around tire. Very good off-roading tire. Pretty good in the mud. Very good in the sand(when aired down). AWESOME on snow and ice(when siped). I've driven around Portland several times when the streets were covered with snow & ice and never slipped once(maybe because I'm the Master). Excellent tire on wet & dry pavement. Excellent tire to balance. Very low noise level. Stacked in the garage waiting for winter.

I've got a set of 35x12.50x17 Toyo Open Country M/Ts on order. So keep an eye out for my set of used MTRs to go up for sale.
