Default Water Pump

Been having coolant showing up on the garage floor so after crawling around the truck I see that the gasket for the water pump on the passenger side looked to be leaking. After searching around the interweb it seems to be "standard procedure" to go ahead and replace the water pump and gaskets versus just the gasket. After getting it apart I see where the problem was at, the o-ring had moved from its sealing surface leaving just the gasket material to try and seal it off. After all said and done I am thinking I could have just replaced the gasket, the pump does not have anything showing in the "weep hole" and there is no play in the pump shaft, but figured WTF go ahead with pump and gaskets while I was at it and had bought them already.

Took me four hours but that was because I wanted to make sure everything was done right, least amout of anti-freeze on the floor, torque specs used when putting parts back on, ect.

To replace the pump.....

Had to take a big Cresent wrench and a plastic mallet to bust the fan nut loose. One guy that did a youtube video on changing the pump in a pick up used a air chisel to bust the nut loose, he put it flat against a corner of the nut and it did come loose pretty easy but that was not something I had in my tool box.

The radiator shroud comes out pretty easy after the fan and top radiator hose is removed, two bolts at the top and one clip to hold a couple metal lines that I think come from the tranny. Caution on putting it back in, the bottom lip goes on the inside of the bottom support.

I also removed the belt tensioner for the long belt before pulling the pump. (remove AC belt only).

Here is some more pics of draining the coolant (don't remove the petcock all the way or it will make a mess) and everything but the pump removed.

Hope it helps, Good luck Hellz, Ed

Nice photos, Ed - thanks! That project is not long off for my 110,000 mile H2 and mine is on the passenger side gasket also. I've been tolerating the slow drip so far.

as always, nice write up Ed.

My mechanic wants to remove the hood to do this. Looks like the hood is 4 bolts, but are we going to have trouble realigning and not damaging it in the process.

comments?

No need to remove the hood, would just add more time to get the job done
