Does anyone buy used ring and pinions?
I?ve only bought one set of used ring and pinions (a set of 5.38?s for my S10) and they whined. (previously setup incorrectly I suppose)
The reason I ask is because I want to swap out the 4.56?s out of my H2 and move up to something steeper (not sure how steep I can go... 5.38?s??)
I just (yesterday) received the 5.13?s for my wife?s Jeep I have to swap out and today my 4.56?s will be in for my Jeep.
By the time you buy the installation kit, gears and labor, I?ll have 1000-1200 per vehicle. I figured if I could sell my 4.56?s out of the H2, it would help offset the price of the new gears.
So, do people buy used gears or is that a no-no?
Thanks,
Mark

Re: Does anyone buy used ring and pinions?
Richmond Gear in Liberty, SC buys used ring and pinions and refurbishes them. I have a basement with three rear end gears for my old '65 GTO that I used to drag race. Some of the boxes still say Richmond Gear on them. I've been away from it for 15 years, but the freight will be expensive because gear sets are heavy and as I remember they don't pay a lot unless they are rare gear sets or in high demand.

Jim,
Thanks bud but I meant do people in general... not so much a company. I know a lot of guys on here have upgraded to 38" tires and could use a set of 4.56 gears.
Just didn't know if anyone buys used or always buys new.
Thanks,
Mark

Re: Does anyone buy used ring and pinions?
I actually could use a set of 4.56's..I plan on doing it anyway but I'm also curious if it's sketchy to buy a used set of ring and pinions :/

WTF, you calling me sketchy???
I've honestly only used one set of used ring and pinion and it howled. The problem I believe is it was howling in the rear end from the person I bought it from. I think if a ring and pinion is setup correctly, it should be fine.
I will make you this offer and there is a chance for it to go haywire on both of our parts.
If you decide to buy these gears, I'll make you an offer.
Install the gears, if for any reason they don't work, I'll give you your money back. The risk is for both of us because I could end up with nothing and you could waste your money on labor (assuming you are paying someone)
If you're interested, let me know.

Re: Does anyone buy used ring and pinions?
Mark,
Why are you considering going to something as steep as a 5.38 with the diesel? I would think that with 40's and the diesel's torque a 4.56 or possibly a 4.88 would be plenty of gear.
I've talked to Travis about converting my truck, Nathan at MPI about a compound setup for it and Guy at SoCal diesel about a stroker and Stage 2 heads...they've all recommended going with a 4.88 with the 41.5" Pit Bulls I plan on running.
5.38 just seems like a LOT of gear.

Re: Does anyone buy used ring and pinions?
Hi Orangecrush or Mark is a stand up guy and would never rip someone off, if he says their good used gears their are. Also used gears are fine as long as they are set up correct when they were install. Make sure the installer knows what the FU-K he's doing. I have installed used gears in lots of trucks and cars that are still on the road for many years after the install.
