a buddy of mine is looking at this H1. First off is this a good daily driving vehicle? What should he look for and know about a vehicle this old? and is it a good deal?

Carey-

If you are talking the one with 91,000 miles-the 97.5 Wagon that just went on ebay today for $26,201-Item number: 4583868722

That was Nick Panopoulos's... He had it on the HML Classifieds for $29,999...

it has the completed service manual and has been taken care of quite faithfully. It has new brakes and rotors and has had the majority of wear items replaced within the last 4000 miles. The truck has not taken a beating. You can PM me if you would like.

The one on Ebay that you were discussing currently has soy biodiesel in the tank. It works great and supports the local economy.

Black H1-

Very nice on the biodiesel. We buy our soyoil from Bunge out of Emporia, KS and Council Bluffs, IA and then rail it to our biodiesel plant in Conroe, TX.

What is the deal with the Black OpenTop there at Sioux Falls? Has it been run hard? Would you consider buying it if you had the option? From the pics, it is difficult to tell but the front control arms look like they have taken a beating.

Thanks in advance for your input...

Ditto on everything already mentioned, but also look into a warranty (preferrably GMPP) if he does end up buying it.

It's a 95. GMPP won't give a warranty out on it.

Three things:

1) Get the VIN
2) Pull a CARFAX. If it was ever registered in a state where Hurricane Rita or Katrina hit, beware!
3) Go here to read about buying a used H1:

First, the price is too high. He should be able to pick up a 95 for sub 25K-especially an opentop.

Second, the resounding theme I seem to see is the model year you get is dependent on what you are going to do with the vehicle... 93-95 NA's have their fans-everything mechanical so great for ease of maintenance but creature comforts minimal i.e. poor a/c and heat, slow on freeway, interior lacking, etc; 97.5 and 98 TD's have their fans with all the interior upgrades, turbodiesel, gearing, ability to btm, etc...; 02 and up have their fan base with the fact they improved the gearing to get closer to that of 98, you can throw lockers in front and rear and compete offroad with 98, better interior from soundproofing standpoint, etc...

Third, Ben with Exotic Warranty might warranty it as long as it passes his inspection. Warranty would probably run $2400 a year with a $100 deductable so, if nothing else, get the thing inspected prior to buying it to insure you aren't having to replace sh*t on it right out of the gate... Trust me, from all my research there is a reason why the warranty costs so much... You get a poorly maintained Hummer and you might as well take out a second mortgage if you can't do alot of the sh*t on your own...

Finally, I have been researching H1's for well over three years (with initial interest and research dating back to '99) and am getting close to pulling the trigger so everything I say is theoretical and has been learned in the lab... I have no real world experience to speak from... so take what I say for what it's worth...

I'll put it to you this way... I'm looking to buy a 2002 OpenTop with less than 50K miles for less than $45K-preferably around $42K. That's my goal... I missed out on a 02 white opentop back in September (wrong color-I want black) that had less than 30K miles that went for $45K, there was a 02 black opentop with 59K miles on ebay last week that the girl would take $44-$45K for right now but I don't like the amount of miles on it plus she has yet to show me pics where she nailed a rock with it-supposedly only minor damage but I'll pass for now. I have been talking with a dealer who has a 02 black opentop with 37K miles who is wanting close to $51K. It's currently on ebay right now. My time period however is really closer to 1st Qtr of 06 so I'll continue to wait. My main reason for wanting a Hummer H1 (outside of the fact I've wanted one for over 6 years now) versus my current H2 is that I work for a biodiesel producer and want to be able to use the product we are making and demonstrate biodiesel's benefits...

Look on the thread on extended warrantys, theres a couple companys mentioned on there, if it's an H1 and he's gonna do any sort of off roading, I would get researching the list before I make my decision.
